Houston, Tex. (September 1) -- The No. 2 ranked Stanford women's volleyball hit for a .324 percentage and posted 14 team blocks on the way to a three games to none sweep of the University of Houston in the season opener for both teams on Wednesday September 1.
Led by Tara Conrad, Jennifer Detmer and three-time All-American Kerri Walsh, the Cardinal coasted to a 15-8, 15-5, 15-11 win in front of 1,028 fans in Hofheinz Pavilion on the UH campus. The trio set the offensive pace for the country's No 2 ranked team, combining for a .479 percentage on 48 attempts. Stanford meanwhile used its size advantage to frustrate the Houston hitters and hold the Cougars to an .094 percentage.
Houston junior transfer Jennifer Wittenburg led all players with 13 kills while preseason All C-USA selection Michelle Frazier spiked seven kills with six defensive digs and three block assists. UH fell to 0-1 while Stanford improved to 1-0.
The Cougars will next be in action at home in Hofheinz Pavilion on Friday, September 3 in the Crowne Plaza Medical Center Houston Invitational. UH will face Loyola of Chicago at 1:00 p.m. and Temple at 8:00 p.m. that same night.
