Friday's match against Colorado was closely contested, as the Lady Cougars were defeated 5-4. Snagging the only two singles victories for Houston were Galina Seliounina at the number one who defeated Jessica Garrow 6-0, 6-2, and Annie Rapp who beat Tracy Moore 6-2, 6-3. Though Houston fought hard winning 2 of 3 in doubles competition, they would eventually fall short by just one match.
Houston lost its second match of the weekend on Saturday to Conference USA rival Marquette by a score of 6-3. Winning in singles play for the Lady Cougars were freshmen Jen Baccarani who defeated Julia Saphozhnikova 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, and Annie Rapp who beat Anna Pavlovic 3-6, 7-5, 6-3. The Cougars were unable to capitalize in doubles, winning only one of its doubles matches.
To conclude the weekend, Houston defeated host UTEP 5-4 on Sunday. It was a heated battle in the singles competition with both teams winning three singles matches. Senior Mette Sigmundstad led the Lady Cougars beating Jana Perkova 7-6, 6-4. Also victorious for Houston were freshmen Jen Baccarani and Karine Urbin at the number four and five spots, respectively. Houston also faired well in doubles action winning two doubles matches against UTEP.
The duo of Joanna Cunliffe and Jen Baccarani triumphed over Elizabeth Stone and Elena Madjarova while Annie Rapp and Karine Urbin finished off Ana Brnas and Amy Dorsey 8-5.
The Cougars are back in action March 4th when they host Oklahoma at 11:00a.m. at the UH Varsity Courts.
