Cougar Tennis Makes Good Showing at Alabama Tournament

Tuscaloosa, Alabama (September 19) - The University of Houston women's tennis team won 12 of their 29 matches at the 1999 Roberta Allison Fall Classic which included Alabama, Arkansas State, Auburn, Florida State, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Samford, Tulane, and UT-Chattanooga. The tournament was set up to have four singles draws and two doubles draws that guaranteed each athlete four matches.

Houston won 7 of 21 singles matches, highlighted by the play of Galina Seliounina who finished number two overall in the Singles Flight A Division. As the number one tournament seed going in, Seliounina beat Nanette Duxin of Florida State 6-3, 7-6 in the quarterfinal round and Aleaya Ignatieva of Ole Miss 6-4, 7-6 in the semifinal round before falling to tournament number three seed Mira Radu of Ole Miss 7-5, 6-0 in the final. Houston's Mette Sigmundstad went 2-2 in singles for the weekend winning her first and last matches in the Flight A Division.

Houston also faired well in doubles action winning 5 of 8 matches and taking home two consolation championships. Seliounina and Sigmundstad teamed up in the Doubles Flight A Division to lose to Anneli Axaater and Molly Rollauer of Tulane 8-6 in the quarterfinal round, and then rebound back to defeat Belinda Guthrie and Gija Geme of Arkansas State 8-5 and Becca Baum and Weyll Chang of Alabama 8-2 in the consolation final to bring home the title.

In the Doubles Flight B Division, Kailey Meisinger and Erin Miller beat Katie Hangstafer and Angela Miller of UT-Chattanooga 8-6 in the first round before losing to Flight B number one seed Andrea Lord and Linda Matteson of Mississippi State 8-0 in the quarterfinal. They rallied back though, defeating Megan McCoy and Caroline Szafrankski of Arkansas State 8-5 in the consolation bracket final.

The Cougars are back in action October 1-3 when they host the University of Houston Fall Classic. Teams that will be in attendance will include: New Mexico, Southern Methodist, Southwest Texas, Texas Tech, Tulsa, UT-El Paso, and UT-San Antonio.
