HOUSTON (September 18) - Ketric Sanford and Mike Green each rushed for over 100 yards as Houston beat Louisiana-Lafayette 45-0 Saturday night.Houston (2-1) gained 300 rushing yards for the first time since 1985 and recorded its first shutout since a 64-0 victory over Rice in 1989. The Cougars finished with 350 yards on 41 carries, while holding Louisiana-Lafayette (0-3) to just 109 yards of total offense.
Sanford scored touchdowns of 8, 5 and 30 yards and finished with 103 yards on 12 carries. Green hit the century mark for the first time in his career as he ran for 129 yards and a touchdown on just eight carries.
Houston started slowly but was able to build a 17-0 halftime lead on a touchdown by Sanford, a 37-yard scoring pass from Jason McKinley to William Pettis and a 22-yard field goal by Mike Clark.
The Cougars put the game out of reach in the third quarter, scoring 28 points on two more touchdowns by Sanford, Green's 7-yard score and a 6-yard TD run by Leif Penn.
McKinley was 9-of-15 for 109 yards without an interception. Penn added 64 rushing yards on seven carries.
The Ragin' Cajuns turned in a miserable offensive performance, managing only 42 rushing yards on 44 carries and completing only 10 passes for 67 yards. Louisiana-Lafayette did not commit any turnovers, but was forced to punt 10 times.
The Cajuns' biggest rusher, Darren Brister, was held to just 29 yards on 20 carries. Quarterback Derek Dyer was 6-of-10 for 39 yards.
