Cindy Avery is in her sixth year at the University of Houston as a Coordinator with the Cougar Pride Program. Avery participates with the athletics scholarship program by fundraising through donor cultivation and stewardship and special events.
Before coming to UH Avery was a teacher at Southern Cayuga Central School in Poplar Ridge, N.Y., from 1988 to 1994. She taught gifted and talented and computer education to grade K-8. In 1994, she worked as a Development and Special Events Coordinator at Wells College in Aurora, N.Y. until 2002. She made her way to UH in 2002 doing development research until 2005, when she then began in her current position.
During her time in N.Y., Avery was a member of the Association of Professional Researchers for Advancement. She was also a Hospitality Coordinator for 2006 Conference USA Football Championship and the 2008 NCAA Basketball Tournament, both in Houston. Avery played softball and lacrosse for the University of Bridgeport where she got her bachelor's degree in physical education and health.
Avery also volunteers much of her own time to others: she coached a Southern Cayuga Little League team and worked with the Aurora Volunteer Fire Department as a firefighter and EMT. She also was a board member for numerous organizations such as Aurora Memorial Playground, Aurora Medical Center, Morgan Opera House, Peachtown Elementary School and Aurora-Ledyard Civic Association.
The Aurora, N.Y., native lives in Spring and has three daughters: Heather, Abby and Megan. She enjoys making jewelry and playing golf in her spare time.
