HOUSTON - Dave Maggard, formerly vice president of sports administration at Turner Sports/Time Warner Inc. and director of athletics at the University of Miami (Florida) and University of California-Berkeley, has been named athletics director at the University of Houston, UH President Arthur K. Smith announced today.
Maggard will assume the UH athletics director's post effective Feb. 1, 2002.
Maggard will be introduced to the UH campus community and the city of Houston at a news conference on Tuesday, Jan. 8, at 2 p.m. in the UH Athletics/Alumni Center.
"Having Dave Maggard agree to lead UH athletics back to national prominence is a clear signal that our sports programs are on the right track," Smith said. "Dave has long been recognized around the country as a leader in collegiate athletics and sports administration. He brings to UH extensive knowledge in this field and an energy level that will serve our campus - and the Houston community - extremely well."
Maggard, who earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Berkeley, is a consultant to the Sacramento (CA) Sports Commission, counseling officials of the commission and medical center on development issues, community outreach, event planning and volunteer programs. He served the UC-Davis Medical Center in a similar capacity until recently.
Prior to his consulting work in Sacramento, Maggard was vice president of Sports Administration for Turner Sports/Time Warner Inc. (1996-2000). In that position he was responsible for business development, marketing of special events and budget preparation and administration. He also served as managing director of sports for the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games (1993-1996).
Maggard was director of athletics at the University of Miami from 1991-1993. During his tenure the Hurricanes won the national football title (1991) and finished No. 2 in the nation in football (1992). Under his direction, Miami's athletics department built a $6 million surplus for men's and women's programs of 20 sports.
During the 18 years he served as director of athletics at UC-Berkeley (1972-1991), the Golden Bears captured 22 national championships in five different sports and established a legacy of financially healthy programs in all sports, including football and basketball.
"The opportunity to move back into a Division 1 athletics director's post - particularly one where the foundation is on such firm footing - is an exciting proposition for me at this point in my life and career," said Maggard, a former Olympic athlete. "During my visits and conversations with President Smith, I have been impressed with his clarity in expressing his desire that the University of Houston regain its national stature in intercollegiate athletics. His enthusiasm has made it an easy decision to join his team and to work toward the goal of making the program one in which the entire university community can be proud
"My wife and I are very excited about joining the UH and Houston community and helping to return Cougar sports to the national spotlight."
At UC-Berkeley and Miami, Maggard concentrated on delivering the ideals of amateur athletics both on the playing fields and courts as well as in the classrooms of those universities. He built programs that many in the collegiate ranks consider to be the prototype for the way a contemporary college athletics department should be run - a broad-based program enjoying success on several fronts, backed by a vigorous fund raising organization.
Maggard's administrative experience has not been limited to the professional posts he has held. He has served on numerous athletics governing bodies, including the prestigious NCAA Basketball Selection Committee. He has also served as executive vice president of The Athletics Conference (TAC), and as a member of the executive board of the U.S. Olympic Committee.
He has played a leading role in formulating policy for intercollegiate athletics as a member of the NCAA Council, the policy-making committee of collegiate athletics.
