Junior Moa Svedenskiold shares medalist honors at -6; Cougars play back nine at -14 to win second event of season
DALLAS – With an impressive back nine, the University of Houston Women's Golf program rallied late to sweep the team and individual championships at the Veritex Bank Collegiate at Trinity Forest Golf Club on Tuesday afternoon.
The 26th ranked Cougars fired a score of 4-under 284 – their lowest total of the tournament – for a total of 869 to win by two strokes over Texas Tech. As a team, the Cougars' 6-woman lineup played the back nine holes at 14-under par, draining 22 birdies with only eight bogeys.
The 2024-25 Cougars became only the second team in program history to win three tournament championships in a single season, joining the 2015-16 squad.
Junior Moa Svedenskiold led the way and won her second individual title in 2024-25 with a score of 6-under 210. The Halmstad, Sweden, native sank five consecutive birdies on the back nine and shared the individual crown with Tulsa's Jennifer Roller.
After earning medalist honors at the Riverbend Intercollegiate at Riverbend Country Club in Sugar Land, Texas, on March 10-11, Svedenskold won the third title of her career, joining All-American Leonie Harm (2015-19) as the only Cougars to win 3+ championships.
She also joined Harm as the only Cougars to win multiple individual tournament titles in the same season. Harm won a school-record three tournaments during the 2018-19 season.
Starting off No. 1 on the 6,576-yard, par 72 course, Svedenskiold moved under par with a birdie at No. 2 but endured back-to-back bogeys at Nos. 3-4 before returning to even par with a birdie on the 412-yard, par-4 sixth hole.
She rebounded impressively from a bogey at No. 11 to sink five straight birdies at Nos. 13-17 and finished the round with a 69.
Junior Hyeonji Kang finished with her second straight even-par round and tied for 15th at 220. Junior Natalie Saint Germain drained four birdies on the back nine and posted a 70 Friday to tie for 21st at 222.
Junior Alexa Saldana tied for 24th with a score of 223 while sophomore Maelynn Kim tied for 33rd at 226. Playing as an individual, freshman Annika Ishiyama finished 52nd with a score of 231.
Host SMU (875), Tulsa (877), UCF (879), Oklahoma State (886), Boston College (888), Iowa (891), Yale (903) and Tarleton State (906) completed the Top-10 team leaders.
UCF's Molly Smith and SMU's Mackenzie Lee tied for third at 4-under 212 while SMU's Emily Odwin finished fifth at 214.
