
Mason Breaks Meet Record, Cougars Win 15 Events at Kirk Baptiste Invitational

Cougars win 11 running events and four field events on Thursday
HOUSTON – Senior Adam Mason broke the men's 800m Kirk Baptiste Invitational meet record as the University of Houston Track and Field program wrapped up its first outdoor meet of the season at the Carl Lewis International Complex on Thursday.
The Cougars finished with 15 victories, 13 second place finishes and 14 third place finishes, along with five new additions to the top ten program list.
RUNNING EVENTS
Mason highlighted the afternoon as he broke the meet record in the men's 800m with a time of 1:49.82.
Following a successful indoor season, junior Kaycee McCoy opened her outdoor campaign with a victory in the 100m hurdles with a personal best time of 13.54. Junior Ali Mack and redshirt sophomore Tairah Johnson finished second and third, clocking times of 13.85 and 13.99 seconds, respectively.
The men's 110m hurdles were led by sophomore Jairius Burton's victory at 14.04 and junior Anthony Trucks followed closely behind at 14.04 for second place. Freshman Noah Hanson recorded a time of 14.33 to complete the sweep.
Freshman King Taylor led the way in the men's 400m finishing first with a time of 47.22 seconds. Freshman Safhi Reed and sophomore Joshua Sims-Waddy followed recording times of 47.76 and 47.84 seconds.
Houston's freshman class dominated the women's 800m. Grace MacDonald won with a time of 2:13.95, Kali Magana took second place as she finished the race in 2:17.87 followed by Aubrey Varner at 2:19.71.
Another Houston sweep was completed in the women's 3000m with freshman Addison Hite winning with a time of 10:06.88, followed by Cadence Patterson's second place time of 10:08.06 and Lily Campos in third at 10:12.94.
Senior Nakoah Witt ran a career-best time of 51.54 to win the men's 400m hurdles. Senior Tyler Graves earned his first podium finish as a Cougar in third place at 52.85.
Freshman sprinter Taylor Jackson finished second in the women's 100m as she crossed the finish line in 11.79.
Sophomore hurdler Madison Dominguez secured third place in the women's 400m hurdles as she clocked in 1:04.97.
Houston's 4x100-meter relay men's and women's squads swept the competition with victories in the relays. The women's crew of junior Matilde Ochoa, freshman Taylor Jackson, freshman Norah Nwonumah and freshman Carlysia Cresser won as they crossed the finish line with a time of 45.24.
The men's squad of junior Ryan Mulholland, sophomore Cayden Broadnax, senior Brice Chabot and freshman Germain Smith-Mata took the victory as Smith-Mata ran the anchor leg and the team clocked a time of 39.49
Broadnax found success in the individual 100m race as he secured second place and was the top collegiate finisher with a personal best time of 10.21.
Houston's freshmen 4x400-meter team of Madyson Thurmond, Ciara Douglas, Grace MacDonald and Kali Magana took first place with a time of 3:53.81.
The men's 4x400-meter relay "A" team of sophomore Nicholas Byrd, freshman Jaylin Santiago, senior Adam Mason, and freshman Damarien Jacobs claimed first place with a time of 3:11.08.
The "B" relay team featuring sophomore Aaron Crittenden, freshman Caden Thurman, sophomore Derek Waite, and freshman Shawn Freeman, finished in second place with a time of 3:13.26.
FIELD EVENTS
Freshman pole vaulter Evina Panagiotou made her outdoor collegiate debut with a clearance of 4.12m to dominate the event. The freshman standout surpassed former Cougar Sarah Howe's 4.10m mark from 2022, securing the No. 3 spot in program history.
Mack came out on top in the women's high jump as she cleared 1.50m to win the event. In the men's high jump, senior My'Kell Beck posted an outdoor personal best to take second with his mark of 2.16m.
Johnson secured second place in the women's long jump with a mark of 5.94m while freshman Athena Stith followed in third at 5.81m.
Graduate Caleb Malbrough opened his final outdoor season with a third place finish in the men's long jump as he recorded a mark of 7.38m.
In men's discus, senior thrower Kevin Grubbs found success as he fueled the program's eighth-best throw with a mark of 57.59m. Sophomore Cordell Nwokeji finished third place as he completed a throw of 50.94m.
Freshman Tirea Reed claimed the second spot in the women's discus with a mark of 50.40m.
Sophomore Kaden Edwards made his Houston outdoor debut with a second place finish in the men's shot put at 17.88m. Nwokeji secured his second third place finish of the day with a mark of 17.80m.
In the women's shot put, thrower Sydney Freeman finished third as she powered a 13.05m throw.
Redshirt freshman Ty Lott had a career-best performance in the men's hammer throw with a mark of 57.41m. His throw secured the No. 6 spot on Houston's all-time outdoor performance list.
Freshman Amelia Pantojas made her collegiate debut in the women's javelin and added her name to the record books with the No. 10 spot in program history at 39.64m. On the men's side, freshman Owen Levesque placed third with a throw of 51.39m.
Freshman Marcela Trevino placed second and made her mark in the women's hammer with her 49.59m throw to claim the No. 10 spot in program history.

Houston will split squads next weekend as it attends the 97th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays at Mike A. Myers Stadium and Soccer Field in Austin, Texas, while the other half remains in Houston at the Victor Lopez Invitational on the campus of Rice, both meets running Thursday, March 27 through Saturday.
