Cougars’ Conference Dates, Schedule Unveiled

Houston opens Big 12 play at home Saturday, Sept. 13, against Colorado
HOUSTON – University of Houston Football hosts Colorado in its Big 12 Conference opener during Week 3 of the season in a matchup set for Saturday, Sept. 13, the league office announced Tuesday.
In total, the Cougars will play six home games and six road games including Big 12 home contests in alternating order against the Buffaloes (Sept. 13), Texas Tech (Oct. 4), Arizona (Oct. 18), West Virginia (Nov. 1) and TCU (Nov. 22). The Cougars visit Oklahoma State (Oct. 11), Arizona State (Oct. 25), UCF (Nov. 8) and Baylor (Nov. 29) in league play.
Houston has also announced a shift to its season opener against Stephen F. Austin. The Cougars and Lumberjacks will kick off the 2025 campaign on Thursday, Aug. 28 – a change from the prior Saturday date. The Cougars renew the Bayou Bucket against Rice on Sept. 6 inside Rice Stadium. Following its league opener against Colorado, Houston caps non-conference play with a visit to Oregon State on Sept. 27.
Among its 12-game schedule, six opponents competed in bowl action during 2024, including Arizona State which won the Dr Pepper Big 12 Football Championship and checks in at No. 14 in ESPN's Way-Too-Early Top 25 for the 2025 season. Texas Tech, Baylor and Colorado also were listed as teams considered for the poll.

ABOUT the COUGARS
Houston Football returns 77 student-athletes and welcomes 30 mid-year enrollees during its second spring under Head Coach Willie Fritz. The Cougars coaching staff also features a pair of new faces courtesy of the Southeastern Conference in Offensive Coordinator Slade Nagle (LSU) and Defensive Coordinator Austin Armstrong (Florida).
Houston's 30 newcomers include 21 transfer portal additions and nine freshman early enrollees. The group includes 15 defensive players, 14 offensive players and one specialist.
Among Houston's returners, 29 appeared in 10+ games a season ago. Thirteen returners made six-or-more starts including five who started all 12 games in defensive back Latrell McCutchin Sr., defensive back A.J. Haulcy, defensive back Kentrell Webb, offensive lineman Demetrius Hunter and defensive lineman Carlos Allen Jr. (12).
