Houston earns first ranking since 2022 after 7-1 start
HOUSTON – After a 7-1 start and its 24-16 ranked road win at #24/25 Arizona State on Saturday, the Houston Cougars Football team is ranked 22nd in both the AP Poll and US LBM Coaches Poll.
The Cougars are ranked for the first time since 2022 after head coach Willie Fritz engineered a three-win turnaround with four games to play, going 4-8 in 2024 to 7-1 in 2025.
Houston has won all four road games this season after handing Arizona State its first home loss since 2023, snapping a 10-game home win streak. The Cougars 24-16 win over the Sun Devils was their first ranked road win since 2017.
Junior quarterback Conner Weigman became the fifth quarterback this season to throw for 200+ yards and a touchdown, rush for 100+ yards and two touchdowns and not throw an interception and the first to do so against a ranked opponent on the road in a win since Kansas State's Adrian Martinez in 2022 at Oklahoma.
Houston's defense ranks 21st nationally, holding opponents to 18.6 points per game. On offense, the Cougars have been nearly perfect in the red zone, converting 92.6% of its trips inside the 20-yard line, the 21st best rate in the country. Houston took a knee in the red zone to run out the clock at Arizona State on its final possession — its red zone scoring rate is 96.1% with the final possession at Arizona State off the ledger.
The Cougars are one of five Big 12 Conference teams ranked in the Week 10 poll.
Houston hosts West Virginia on Saturday, Nov. 1 at 11 a.m. The Cougars will honor the 2015 Houston Football team that won the 2015 Peach Bowl and finished with a 13-1 record.
