Houston Football to honor Coach Hester with black out game vs. West Virginia
HOUSTON – The #22 Houston Football team will honor the late Director of Strength and Performance Kurt Hester during its game on Saturday against West Virginia by changing its game theme to be the team's Black Out game – Coach Hester's favorite color was black.
Hester, who battled Stage IV melanoma since February, passed away on Saturday prior to Houston's upset win at then-#24/25 Arizona State.
The Cougars will wear black uniforms for the game in his honor and brandish #Unbreakable on their helmet bumpers (the lower bottom piece of the helmet), Coach Hester's slogan his last eight months of life.
John M. O'Quinn Field will include #Unbreakable features in the field painting for Houston's nationally televised game.
The Spirit of Houston will have a tribute during their halftime performance and spell out "unbreakable" on the field.
Black merchandise will be available at the Team Shop connected to the Stadium Garage and at licensed retailers across the city.
Additional plans to honor Coach Hester are actively being developed.
Houston was previously set to have its Black Out game on Nov. 22 against TCU but will now hold the Black Out game on Nov. 1 vs. West Virginia. Kick-off is set for 11 a.m. on FS1. Houston has won each of its last two Black Out games, beating West Virginia in 2023 and Kansas State in 2024.
In addition to the Black Out theme, Houston will honor the 2015 Peach Bowl and American Athletic Conference Championship winning team, 10 years after the program hoisted the Peach Bowl trophy. Fans can purchase special $20.15 tickets to commemorate the 10-year anniversary.
