New board will cover more than 7,000 square feet in West end zone
HOUSTON – University of Houston Football fans will see the game from a new perspective during home games inside TDECU Stadium during the 2024 season.
As part of the construction of the Memorial Hermann Football Operations Center, TDECU Stadium will feature a new 7,200-square-foot video board at the West end of the facility above Queenie O'Rourke's Party Pavilion with the bottom of the board standing nearly 60 feet above surface level.
Measuring 45 feet tall by 160 feet wide, the new video board is nearly triple the size of the previous video board (2,584 square feet) and ranks 11th nationally among all Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) schools
Its square footage stands second in the Big 12 Conference and, at 160 feet, is the widest video board in the league. The board is as wide as a football field from sideline to sideline.
With the construction of the Memorial Hermann Football Operations Center costing $130 million, Houston Athletics administrators estimate the video board constitutes $10 million of that total when considering steel, foundation, concrete work, wiring, installation and labor.
Installed by Piros with Daktronics handling the commissioning and integration, the new board is capable of generating more than 68 billion colors with a viewing angle of 170 degrees. In other words, fans can stand nearly parallel to the board and still see a clear picture before shading occurs.

"Video boards are easily the most dynamic piece for fan interaction at college football games. The original board at TDECU Stadium was impressive when it was installed 10 years ago, but it was time for an upgrade," Senior Associate Athletics Director for Capital Projects T.J. Meagher said. "This project provided the opportunity to do that."
With the University of Houston and its stadium located just over an hour from the Gulf of Mexico, the board's engineering needed to handle the wind load at high levels.
That required rebuilding the foundation in the West end zone upon which to build the board.
"The engineering to do the foundation was one of the most elaborate pieces of the project," Meagher said. "Since we were already excavating the slab for other reason, the economy of doing it now was very favorable."
The new video board installation covers far more than what is seen in the West end zone. Working with the crystal clear video on the board, the sound system within TDECU Stadium was updated.
LD Systems replaced the sound system inside TDECU Stadium two years ago. When the time came to prepare for the Memorial Hermann Football Operations Center construction, officials were ready to update the speakers from the previous installation and add new speakers as needed to have sound levels distributed equitably throughout the stadium.
The Memorial Hermann Football Operations Center is expected to fully open for the start of the 2025 season.
