Jonathan Tipton joins Cougars as assistant coach
HOUSTON – Jonathan Tipton has joined the University of Houston Track & Field program as an assistant coach, Director of Track & Field Will Blackburn announced Friday.
Tipton will coach the Houston throwers after spending one season at Lamar.
"I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to join the University of Houston Track and Field program under Coach Blackburn's vision," Tipton said. "This is a dream come true, and I am thrilled to contribute to such a prestigious and dynamic team. I look forward to working with the talented athletes and dedicated staff, and I am excited about the future achievements we will accomplish together."
At Lamar, Tipton was part of the staff that helped the Cardinals place fourth overall at the 2024 Southland Indoor Conference Championships.
Prior to Lamar, Tipton spent the 2023 season coaching the throwers at North Texas. While there, he coached 16 top-eight finishers in the Conference USA, including All-American and two-time conference champion KeAyla Dove, who qualified for both the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor National Championships in the shot put. His resume also featured seven conference title medalists and five school record holders.
Before heading to Denton, Tipton was an associate head coach for his alma mater at Sam Houston from 2014 to 2022. Under his guidance, the Bearkats won 13 Southland Conference team championships from the men's indoor (2016-19), men's outdoor (2017, 2019), women's indoor (2014, 16-18) and women's outdoor (2014, 2016, 2018) seasons. His tenure included 55 medalists with 21 conference champions, 35 NCAA West Preliminary qualifiers, five outdoor national title qualifiers, seven NCAA All-Americans and one U.S. Olympic qualifier in hammer thrower Ashley Jenkins.
From August 2011 to December 2013, Tipton was an assistant coach at UC Davis, leading the women's squad to two Big West Conference titles. This included nine Big West Conference Championships top-eight finishers with five medalists and one conference champion, Ashley Hearn, who became an All-American and a qualifier for the U.S Olympic Trials in the discus throw.
Tipton earned his bachelor of science and master of arts in kinesiology at Sam Houston and worked as a graduate assistant from 2009-11.
Among the athletes he coached was Chris Cralle, who won two SLC titles in the hammer and weight throws and became an All-American while qualifying for the NCAA National Outdoor Championships. In addition to Cralle's collegiate achievements, Tipton coached Cralle to a 2012 Olympic Trials Silver Medal and the 2010 NACAC U-23 Championships title in the hammer throw.
