Chevron’s support to enhance student-athlete development through leadership and career programs
HOUSTON – University of Houston Athletics is proud to announce a transformative community partnership with Chevron U.S.A. Inc. that will elevate its Student-Athlete Development program.
Beginning November 2024, the current program, under the direction of Director of Student-Athlete Development La'Ron Haywood, will be re-named the Chevron Student-Athlete Leadership Program of University of Houston Athletics.
Proceeds from Chevron will directly benefit University of Houston student-athletes by funding initiatives promoting personal, professional and leadership growth. These funds will support a range of opportunities including community service projects, leadership workshops, seminars and mentorship programs.
"We are incredibly grateful to Chevron for their commitment to the growth and success of our student-athletes," Houston Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Eddie Nuñez said. "This partnership will provide transformative opportunities that directly support their development preparing them for life beyond athletics. With Chevron's support, we can empower our student-athletes to become future leaders in their communities and careers, making a lasting impact that extends well beyond their time at the University of Houston."
As part of the Chevron Student-Athlete Leadership Program, Houston Athletics will launch a career development initiative aimed at assisting student-athletes with networking, securing internships, job interviews, and professional career opportunities. This will include events such as networking nights, career fairs, and additional resources like professional attire for job interviews and attendance at national conferences.
Chevron's support will also enhance Houston Student-Athlete Development R.I.Z.E. (Rise Up 2 Excellence) programming which includes community engagement and leadership development.
"I am beyond appreciative of Chevron for investing in our student-athletes," Houston Director of Student-Athlete Development La'Ron Haywood said. "This partnership is a master key to the opening of multiple doors and opportunities that will truly benefit our student-athletes and their holistic development. I look forward to continuing to grow the student-athlete development department and building a legacy that will change the lives of current and future Cougars."
"We're proud of our long-standing relationship with the University of Houston," said Bruce Niemeyer, President, Americas Exploration & Production for Chevron. "The Chevron Student-Athlete Leadership Program is an exciting next step, and we look forward to supporting Houston's next generation of leaders. This city is our home, and it's important for us to invest in the future of young Houstonians."
Chevron will also partner with Houston Athletics on the UH Athletics Team of the Year award, which is presented annually at the Cougar Choice Awards. This prestigious honor recognizes a team based on its community impact, athletic success, academic achievement, and overall contribution to the department.
The partnership is the latest in Chevron's support of Houston Athletics. In February, Chevron signed on as the title sponsor for Houston Women's Golf's annual spring tournament at Golf Club of Houston. The second-annual Chevron Collegiate is scheduled for Feb. 24-25, 2025, in Humble, Texas.
