Andre Ware recognition, annual Bayou Bucket Luncheon among upcoming events
HOUSTON – With the upcoming college football season less than one month away, University of Houston Fans can get in on the excitement with a pair of Touchdown Club of Houston events including the Hanover Co. Touchdowner of the Year Dinner, honoring Houston legendary quarterback Andre Ware, as well as the annual H-E-B Bayou Bucket Luncheon.Â

Hanover Co. Touchdowner of the Year Dinner
Former Houston quarterback and 1989 Heisman Trophy winner Andre Ware will be recognized as the Hanover Co. Touchdowner of the Year at the annual gala held at 7 p.m., Aug. 16, from the Bayou City Event Center.

Ware threw for 4,699 yards and 46 touchdowns in the 1989 season, his junior year, breaking 26 NCAA records in the process and helping the Cougars to a 9-2 record and a final ranking at No. 14. He was selected seventh overall by the Detroit Lions in 1990 and played four seasons in both the NFL and CFL. Ware was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2004. Eight years later, he was inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame. Ware joined ESPN in 2003 as a college football commentator and is also a regular contributor to College Football Live and other ESPN studio shows. Ware also serves as an analyst for Houston Texans radio.

The Touchdowner of the Year plaque has been given annually by the TD Club since 1966 for extraordinary contributions and outstanding achievements reflecting honor and sportsmanship to football over a lengthy period. Past winners include Bear Bryant, Darrell Royal, Harry Fouke, John David Crow, Doak Walker, Jack Pardee, Bill Yeoman, Earl Campbell, Kenny Houston, Spike Dykes, Jerry LeVias, Robert McNair, Jackie Sherrill, Dan Pastorini and Wade Phillips.

The 2023 UIL Preseason Greater Houston High School Football Team also will be presented at the gala.

Tickets are $50 each. Tables are 10 seats each. Tables cost $500 (regular table), $750 (bronze sponsorship), $1,000 (silver sponsorship), $1,500 (gold sponsorship) and $2,500 (platinum sponsorship). Tickets need to be purchased by Fri., Aug. 11, as the recent supply chain problems are affecting the availability of food for events.

H-E-B Bayou Bucket Luncheon
Houston Head Coach Dana Holgorsen will be among featured speakers at the Bayou Bucket Luncheon at noon, Sept. 6, from the Rice Stadium R Room. Three days later, the Cougars and Owls will battle for the Bayou Bucket, a trophy first awarded by the TD Club in 1974 and presented to the winning team. This year's game is set for 6 p.m., Sept. 9, at Rice Stadium.

Houston has won the Bayou Bucket in each of the last seven years, a record possession in the rivalry. The Cougars retained the Bucket via a 34-27 thriller at TDECU last season, clinching the victory by a defending a pass in the endzone as time expired. Houston holds a 33-11 advantage in the all-time series and a 31-10 record since the inception of the Bayou Bucket.Â
