Houston totals 179 representatives on American Athletic Conference squad
HOUSTON – The University of Houston placed 179 student-athletes on its final American Athletic Conference All-Academic Team, adding another highlight in the classroom to an academic term which featured a department-record 3.03 GPA during 2022-23.
Houston Swimming & Diving earned the league's Team Academic Excellence Award for the sport which is given to the program with the highest cumulative GPA. The Cougars finished with a 3.55 GPA. The award was the first for the program as members of The American.
To be eligible for the All-Academic Team, a nominee must have competed in an American-sponsored sport, attained a minimum grade-point average of 3.0 for the preceding academic year, and completed a minimum of two consecutive semesters or three consecutive quarters of academic work, with a total of 18 semester or 27 quarter credits, not including remedial courses.
"What an excellent year for our student-athletes. At the end of the day, our mission is to ensure we bring kids to the University of Houston and help them graduate," Houston Vice President for Athletics Chris Pezman said. "To see the academic success our student-athletes are having with the added workload they have, is something I'm very proud of. Every University of Houston alumnus and fan should be able to stick their chest out with pride with what our kids are doing academically."
Houston Baseball paced all Cougar teams with 25 representatives followed by Swimming & Diving (24), Softball (17), Men's Track and Field/Cross Country (16), Soccer (16), Women's Track and Field/Cross Country (15), Football (15), Volleyball (13), Men's Golf (12), Tennis (10), Women's Golf (9), Women's Basketball (5) and Men's Basketball (2).
