Restaurant mogul, Summer and Winter Olympian epitomize H-Town Speed City
This season, the Houston track and field and cross country program will spotlight multiple alumni and their accomplishments both while as student-athletes and as accomplished members of the community.
Houston has had a plethora of successful track and field athletes on the competition surface and in the real world. Brooks Bassler was a conference champion turned entrepreneur and Seun Adigun was a six-time conference champ turned Olympian and then Olympian again in the Winter Olympics.
Bassler (2002) and Adigun (2009) epitomized Houston Track and Field as student-athletes and to this day as leaders in the Houston community.
Brooks Bassler, 1998-02, student-athlete
Bassler's collegiate career started off just about as good as it could. The high jumper won a conference title as a freshman in 1998 and helped the Cougars win both the indoor and outdoor Conference USA team titles in legendary head coach Tom Tellez's final season at the helm.
Now a local restaurant mogul, Bassler has leapt to new heights as the founder and owner of BB's Tex-Orleans the growing Cajun/Creole restaurant. What started out as a single restaurant with nine tables 15 years ago in Montrose has now grown to 14 locations in Houston and San Antonio.
BB's dine-in menu was inspired by Bassler's grandmother (Maw Maw), family recipes, and extensive research from inside the best po'boy shops throughout the New Orleans area. Serving traditional Southern Louisiana-style cooking fused with a Texas twist, BB's created its very own homemade food concept called "Tex-Orleans cooking."
As a proud alum, Bassler's BB's Tex-Orleans restaurant has given back to the Cougars and its student-athletes in many ways, helping Houston compete on the national stage.
Seun Adigun, 2006-09, student-athlete
Since 2004, only 34 humans have competed in both the Summer and Winter Olympics, Houston's Seun Adigun is one of them after making her Olympic debut in 2012 in the 100-meter hurdles before competing in the bobsleigh in the 2018 Winter Olympics. Adigun was the first-ever African athlete who participated in both the Summer and Winter Olympics after founding Nigeria's bobsleigh team.
The Nigerian had a highly decorated career as a Cougar, earning All-American honors as a senior in 2009 in the 100 hurdles, winning three-straight indoor conference crowns in the 60-meter hurdles and a pair of 100 hurdles conference titles as well.
Adigun held the school record in the 60 hurdles for nearly a decade and was 0.02 seconds off the school record in the 100 hurdles. The Olympian ranks second all-time in program history in the 100 hurdles and helped the women win their first 400-meter relay title in Conference USA since 2000 when the Cougars won the 2007 relay title.
After college, Adigun won the 2010 African Championships in the 100 hurdles and the 2011 All-Africa Games 100 hurdles.
Now a successful healthcare professional, Adigun added "Dr." to her byline. Dr. Seun Adigun is a chiropractor and biomechanist, focuses on injury prevention and rehabilitation while bringing an extremely unique blend to sports medicine. Dr. Seun specializes in treatment to professional athletes, working with individuals who have represented over 10 different NFL teams, Summer & Winter Olympians, World Record holders, MLB, NCAA D-I football, track & field, and the Canadian Football League.
