Houston Director of Strength & Performance recognized at profession’s annual convention
ORLANDO, Fla. – Last week at the annual National Conference of the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches association (CSCCa), University of Houston Director of Sports Performance Darl Bauer was presented with the profession's highest honor.
Bauer was recognized as a Master Strength and Conditioning Coach, joining an elite company of just over 300 others who possess this level of certification. The award is bestowed upon those who represent professionalism, knowledge, experience, expertise, as well as longevity in the field.
To be eligible for the honor, individuals must hold at least a bachelor's degree, be a currently practicing full-time strength & conditioning coach for a collegiate or professional team, hold membership and good standing within CSCCa, hold the NCAA-accredited CSCCa certification and be a full-time strength coach at the collegiate and/or professional level for a minimum of 12 years.
Bauer, who oversees strength training & performance for Houston Football, joined the Cougars on Jan. 13, 2019, following 10 years as a member of West Virginia's Strength & Conditioning Staff. He earned his bachelor's degree in physical education from Hillsdale College (Hillsdale, Mich.) in 2008 and a master's degree in athletic coaching education from West Virginia in 2010.
Bauer on the significance of the honor …
"It is a great honor to be recognized by the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association as a Master Strength and Conditioning Coach. I developed a passion for this profession at a young age and for that I am grateful. Being a strength coach is a title that means a lot to me, adding the master tag to it makes it mean even more. My wife Carly and my kids (Gigi, Boone and Lula Leigh) support me to no end and for that I am thankful to be able to do what I love every day. I love having the ability to physically develop athletes that leads to on field success. My favorite aspect however are the relationships developed with athletes and helping equip them with mental tools that lead to off field success and in their future lives. I appreciate Dana Holgorsen for trusting me in my role as Head Strength Coach and empowering me to be my best every day. Thank you to all the coaches that have influenced me over the years, but especially the Houston Football Strength Staff (Kevin McCadam, Nate Majnaric, Brett Holgorsen, Dave Underwood and Rocky Tantu) for their commitment to daily excellence."
CSCCa Certification Coordinator Jenavi Pina on the honor …
"Darl has met each of these requirements. He has taken and passed the SCCC certification examination offered by the CSCCa. This examination is the most comprehensive certification of its kind. It is scientific, practical, challenging, and is very specific to the field of strength and conditioning. In addition, Coach Bauer is a leader in his field and is highly respected by his peers and co-workers. This individual has dedicated his life and career to the field of collegiate strength & conditioning, entitling him to receive the prestigious honor of being recognized as a Master Strength and Conditioning Coach. It is a pleasure to have Darl as a member of the Collegiate Strength & Conditioning Coaches association, which was created specifically to represent and promote the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coach. Unlike other existing professional organizations, membership in this association is restricted to strength and conditioning coaches of collegiate and professional-level athletic programs."
