Glawe, Watkins Among Leaders at Valspar Collegiate Invitational

Watkins with 68 in Tuesday’s Final Round to surge into tie for 14th; Glawe tied for 11th to lead Cougars
PALM CITY, Fla. – University of Houston Men's Golf super senior Braxton Watkins posted a 68 in the Final Round of the Valspar Collegiate Invitational to finish in a tie for 14th and join sophomore teammate Wolfgang Glawe among the Top-15 leaders on Tuesday afternoon.
A day after shooting a 65 in the Second Round, Glawe posted a 73 Tuesday and tied for 11th with a score of 5-under 208. Playing as an individual, Watkins enjoyed the team's low round of the day and tied for 14th at 209.
Competing as an individual, Watkins began his Final Round on a rough note with a bogey at No. 18 on the 6,943-yard, par-71 course. The Winthrop, Ark., native drained two birdies in a 3-hole stretch on Nos. 3-5 to return to even par and moved into red numbers with birdies on No. 8 and No. 10.
He added two more birdies on No. 13 and No. 15 and capped his tournament with a pair of pars to join five others in a tie for 14th.
A transfer from Kansas in his first season with the Cougars, Glawe earned his best finish of the season and led Houston with a score of 208.
Junior Santiago De La Fuente recorded his second straight round of 70 and tied for 33rd at 213 while sophomore Jacob Borow tied for 42nd at 215 after posting a 70 in Tuesday's Final Round. Senior Austyn Reily tied for 66th at 220 while sophomore Drew Murdock tied for 81st at 227.
Playing as an individual, super senior Campbell Gibson tied for 78th at 226.
The Valspar Collegiate Invitational is annually one of the nation's premier events. In 2023, 12 of the 16 schools competing rank among the GolfStat Top 50 with six of the Top 10 and eight of the Top 25.
Houston posted a 54-hole score of 854 to finish 13th. #4 North Carolina captured the team championship with a score of 825 to finish six shots ahead of #3 Texas Tech.
#10 Texas (837), #34 Ohio State (839), #7 Florida State (839), #14 Texas A&M (843), #2 Arizona State (843), #9 Pepperdine (846), #36 Wake Forest (847) and #37 Duke (847) rounded out the Top 10.

Following the Valspar Collegiate Invitational Houston will send individuals to the Huntsville Toyota Walden Invitational, set for March 27-28 at Walden on Lake Conroe Golf Club.
From there, the Cougars compete as a team for the last time in the regular season when they tee off at the Aggie Invitational at Traditions Club in Bryan-College Station, Texas, on April 10-11.
The Cougars enter the postseason when they tee off at the American Athletic Conference Championships at Pelican Golf Club in Belleair, Fla., on April 21-23.
