Tamayo-Garza sets 100-meter dash meet record, wins 200-meter dash in season debut
HOUSTON – Houston won seven different track and field events and broke a meet record at the Kirk Baptiste Spring Break Invitational at the Carl Lewis International Complex on a gusty and stormy Thursday.
Senior Cecilia Tamayo-Garza opened the 2023 outdoor season with two event wins, winning the 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash. Tamayo-Garza broke the meet record in the 100, crossing the finish line in 11.54 seconds. Tamayo-Garza ran what would have been a meet record in the 200 but got a 5.4 mile-per-hour wind aid, nullifying the record time.
Junior Shaun Maswanganyi posted one of the top times in the country in the 100-meter dash with a photo finish 10.13 second time. The Olympian finished second overall in the event behind professional sprinter Elijah Morrow and currently leads the nation in the event.
Alexis Tilford-Rutherford and Destiny Lawrence won the long jump and triple jump, respectively on Thursday. Tilford-Rutherford jumped 5.98 meters while Lawrence jumped 12.78 meters to win their events.
Sophomore Eleni Kaiser won her first collegiate event on Thursday, winning the 1,500 meters in 4:56.29.
Junior Lloyd Frilot won the 400-meter dash in a personal record 48.94 seconds. Frilot's first heat time was fast enough to withstand the faster seed times from heat two and three.
The men's 1,600-meter relay team posted a respectable opening meet time of 3:12.16 to win the event by eight seconds.
Houston honored Hall of Honor inductee and former Cougar great Kirk Baptiste during the meet. Baptiste was a silver medalist in the 200 at the Olympics in 1984 and won gold at the 1987 World Indoor Championships.
