Five Qualify for NCAA Indoor Championships

Beckford, Maswangayi, Sampy, Tuilefano, Wilson post top 16 marks nationally in respective events
HOUSTON – Five Houston track and field student-athletes were invited to the NCAA Indoor Championships in Albuquerque, N.M. after their marks ranked in the top 16 nationally following conference championship weekend. The five Cougars attending the championships is the most representation Houston has had at the indoor championships since 2019.

Senior Kelly-Ann Beckford has broken the school record three times this season, broke the meet record at the American Athletic Conference Indoor Championships on Saturday and won her first conference title in the process. The Trelawny, Jamaica native holds the 10th fastest time in the country, 2:02.59, from her school record time at the Arkansas Qualifier. Â

Junior Shaun Maswanganyi has the 13th fastest 60-meter dash time entering the indoor championships after he tied his personal best time of 6.58 seconds at the American Indoor Championships during the preliminary round of the meet. Maswanganyi's time ranks fourth all-time in Houston history.

Senior Christyan Sampy broke the school record in the pole vault with a title winning jump of 5.54 meters at the conference championships on Friday. The pole vaulter has posted the ninth-highest jump in the country this season. Sampy also holds the outdoor school record in the pole vault with Antonio Ruiz.

Graduate Nu'uausala Tuilefano competed in three meets this season and made the most of it as she shattered the school and meet record at the American Indoor Championships in the shot put with a 17.46-meter throw on her third throw of the competition. Tuilefano ranks 14th nationally after she beat the meet record by 0.90 meters.

Junior De'Vion Wilson ran the school record in the 60-meter hurdles in a time of 7.69 seconds after running a previous school record of 7.70 in prelims of the Houston Invitational. Wilson ranks 12th nationally.

Competition in Albuquerque begins March 10 and concludes March 11.
