Veterans snatch conference awards after strong performances in New Mexico
HOUSTON – For the first time this season Houston track and field's Kelly-Ann Beckford and Priscilla Adejokun claimed American Athletic Conference Track and Field weekly honors, respectively.
For Beckford, the Track Athlete of the Week award is her first as a Cougar after transferring from Division II Lincoln University and Houston's first Women's Track Athlete of the Week this season.
The Trelawny, Jamaica, native broke a 23-year-old school record in the 800-meter run at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic as she clocked a two minute, 5.04 second altitude adjusted time in Albuquerque, N.M.
The 800-meter school record holder broke the time by nearly three seconds without the altitude adjustment and ran the fastest collegiate time at the meet.
Beckford's time ranks 22nd nationally and still leads the American.
Adejokun continued her consistent run of results in the weight throw, finishing second overall at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic to earn Women's Field Athlete of the Week.
The Melissa, Texas, native has finished second overall in every meet this season and has throw 21-plus meters in three of four meets and 20-plus meters every meet.
The All-American's throw of 21.04 meters continues her run of 12-consecutive meets throwing at least 20 meters dating back to the 2021 indoor season.
Adejokun has posted the best mark in the conference every meet this season and currently ranks 16th nationally.
