Cougars win five events at home meet, crack top 10 in multiple events at Arkansas
HOUSTON – Freshman Mak'hi Falkquay won 60-meter dash and the 200-meter dash at the Howie Ryan Invitational and senior Benjamin Okafor finished second in the long jump at the Tyson Invitational in Arkansas as the Houston track and field team opened its weekend of competition on Friday.
In total, Houston four student-athletes won five events at the Howie Ryan Invitational, winning the women's 60-meter dash, 200-meter dash, triple jump and shot put, and the men's 60-meter dash.
For Falkquay, her 7.51 second time in the 60 was fast enough to win her first collegiate race as a Cougar. The freshman had previously finished as high as second at the Robert Platt Invitational. The Austin, Texas native then completed the double by winning the 200 in personal best 24.36 seconds.
In the triple jump, junior Destiny Lawrence posted a season-best 12.87-meter jump to win her second event of the season.
Freshman Aaron Bell won his first collegiate meet at the Howie Ryan Invitational, leading the Cougars to a one-two finish in the 200-meter dash. Bell posted a personal record 21.36 time in the win beating teammate Dylan Brown (21.49) and former Houston All-American Kahmari Montgomery (21.78).
Bell's time ranks third in the American Athletic Conference with his personal best time.
The final field event to finish ended with a Cougar posting the best mark as Nu'uausala Tuilefano winning the shot put with a 15.11-meter throw on her first attempt. The win marks Tuilefano's first of the season.
In Arkansas, senior Brandon Seagreaves posted the second-fastest 3,000-meter run time, and the fastest since 2017, with an 8:07.98 fourth place finish. Fellow senior 3,000 runner, Claire Meyer posted the school's third-fastest time with a personal record 9:39.65 time in the women's race.
Earlier in the day, Okafor posted a season-best 7.49-meter leap in the long jump, finishing second overall at the Tyson Invitational.
Graduate Priscilla Adejokun continued her run consistency with her 13th-straight 20-meter throw in the weight throw in Arkansas.
Trey East III ran a personal record 46.89 in the 400-meter dash, the ninth-fastest time in school history. East III moves to second in the American with the personal best time.
Hurdlers De'Vion Wilson and DJ Akindele ran good races in the 60-meter hurdles. Wilson finished second in 7.76 and Akindele finished fifth in 7.84 in a loaded final.
