Houston student-athletes earn high marks for 2013-2014 to 2016-2017 freshman cohorts
HOUSTON – University of Houston student-athletes outpaced the general student body, registering a four-year class average of 65%, compared to 62% for all students as announced with the release of the NCAA's Division I graduation success rate data on Wednesday.
Houston student-athletes combined to post an 80% Graduate Success Rate (GSR) according to the NCAA's report which reflects a four-year average of freshmen who entered school from 2013-16 and graduated within a six-year period.
Five Houston programs posted a four-year score of 90% or higher including Swimming & Diving (94), Softball (95), Baseball (90) including Women's Golf (100) and Soccer (100) which notched perfect scores. Eight of Houston's 17 sport programs were at a mark of 80% or better with Volleyball (89), Men's Basketball (83) and Men's Golf (83) joining the teams above.
The Graduation Success Rate was developed by the NCAA as a measurement tool for tracking student-athletes' academic progress toward graduation.
The GSR formula removes from the rate student-athletes who leave their institution while academically eligible and includes student-athletes who transfer to a school after initially enrolling elsewhere.
"I am so pleased with our continued success academically," Vice President for Athletics Chris Pezman said. "The sustained success we're seeing from our student-athletes and how we continue to outpace our general student body in graduating young people while helping them reach a lifelong dream of obtaining their degree is what drives us day in and day out."
In the spring 2023 semester, 400+ Houston student-athletes combined to post a 2.96 semester grade-point average (GPA), passing more than 94 percent of the nearly 5,400 hours attempted. The Cougars also raised their spring semester GPA from 2.90 in 2022 to its 2.96 mark in 2023. Nearly 100 student-athletes received Dean's List honors for posting a semester GPA of 3.5 or higher with 19 earning a perfect 4.0 GPA in the spring 2023 semester. Forty (40) student-athletes received their degrees last May.
Eleven (11) sport programs recorded a GPA of 3.0 or higher with Women's Golf's 3.77 leading the way. Men's Golf finished with a 3.26 semester to lead all men's programs.
The other 3.0 honorees included Women's Cross Country (3.74), Tennis (3.59), Swimming & Diving (3.46), Soccer (3.41), Volleyball (3.26), Softball (3.21), Men's Cross Country (3.09), Baseball (3.07) and Women's Track & Field (3.07).
