
Cougars Raise Bar Academically, Athletically During Fall

Houston’s 400+ student-athletes post 2.91 GPA led by 108 Dean’s List honorees
HOUSTON – University of Houston student-athletes shined on and off the field during fall 2022 highlighted in the classroom by a combined 2.91 GPA and total of 108 students on the Dean's List which recognizes individuals with a 3.5 GPA or higher.
During the semester, 25 student-athletes registered a perfect 4.0 GPA while as a department, the Cougars saw a rise in hours passed from 91.82% during fall 2021 to 93.53% in fall 2022. Houston's 400+ student-athletes also reduced withdrawn hours from 310 in fall 2021 to 249 in fall 2022.
Eleven Houston sport programs registered a 3.0 GPA or higher during the fall including women's golf (3.72), tennis (3.59), soccer (3.45), swimming & diving (3.41), softball (3.40), volleyball (3.39), men's cross country (3.34), women's cross country (3.32), baseball (3.27), men's golf (3.20) and women's track and field (3.05).
Among Houston's 25 student-athletes who registered a 4.0 GPA, six were members of the swimming & diving program and four competed in soccer. Houston Athletics also saw 25 student-athletes graduate during the fall.
EXCELLENCE ON THE FIELD
The academic success followed historic on-field success led by Houston Volleyball's run in the NCAA Tournament to the Sweet 16 and American Athletic Conference Championship behind a 30-4 overall record and 19-1 mark in The American. The league title was Houston's first since 1999 and the run to the Sweet 16 was the program's first since 1994. The Cougars boasted two All-America honors for the first time since 1980 with senior Abbie Jackson and junior Kate Georgiades earning recognition from the American Volleyball Coaches Association and VolleyballMag.com.
Houston Men's Basketball secured the first #1 national ranking in the Associated Press Poll and USA TODAY Sports Coaches polls for the first time since March 1983. The Cougars currently sit at #2 and are 14-1 overall and 2-0 in The American.
Cougar Football capped the season with a 23-16 victory against Louisiana in the Independence Bowl to move to 8-5 overall while marking the first time the program had won consecutive bowl games since the 2014-15 seasons. Senior D'Anthony Jones led the nation in forced fumbles per game (0.38), junior Nathaniel Dell paced the country in receiving touchdowns (17) and receiving yards (1,398) and senior Clayton Tune set The American single-season record with 40 passing touchdowns.
Houston Cross Country saw two student-athletes earn All-Region honors including senior Claire Meyer who concluded her season with the Cougars best female individual finish at the NCAA Regional Championships since 1994. She also became the program's first female All-Conference selection since the Cougars joined The American.
Cougar Swimming & Diving captured its sixth consecutive Phill Hansel Invitational and posted four new top-10 all-time finishes at the event in additional to defeating Tulane in the program's lone two home meets during the fall.
Houston Women's Golf freshman Moa Svedenskiold captured a share of the Jim West Challenge individual championship in late October, becoming the first freshman in school history to earn medalist honors. Fellow freshman Natalie Saint Germain fired a school-record 64 at the Schooner Fall Classic in late September. Houston Men's Golf posted a trio of Top-5 team, including a fourth-place showing at the Williams Cup in October.
Two Houston Soccer student-athletes earned All-Conference recognition with Emma Clarke earned Second Team honors and Alex Whitcraft being named to the Rookie Team as the Cougars picked up six victories including defeating South Florida for the first time since 2004. Houston's home matchup against Baylor drew 1,006 fans on Sept. 1, which stands at the third-highest attended game in team history.
Houston Women's Basketball, which was picked to finish second in The American, wrapped 2022 by defeating SMU, 60-44, in the program's first American Athletic Conference competition.
In Tennis, Elena Trencheva and Gabriela Cortes advanced to the Doubles Round of 16 and Sophie Schouten advanced to the Singles Consolation Quarterfinals at the ITA Division I Women's Texas Regional Championship in late September.
