Hurdler breaks school record twice in 60-meter hurdles, ranks third nationally

HOUSTON – Highlighted by junior De'Vion Wilson's school record in the 60-meter hurdles, the University of Houston track and field team won seven events at its Houston Invitational on Friday in Yeoman Fieldhouse.

For the third-straight meet, Wilson and fellow hurdler Destiny Smith won the men's and women's 60 hurdles, respectively.

The "oohs" and "ahs" came early in the preliminary round of the 60 hurdles as Wilson broke the school record in 7.70 seconds, topping the previous record by 0.01 seconds. Wilson led the Cougars to a one-two finish in the event with senior DJ Akindele finishing second in a lifetime-best 7.78. Both Wilson and Akindele hold the top two times in the American Athletic Conference, respectively.

Senior Cecilia Tamayo-Garza won the 200-meter dash for the second-straight meet with a season-best 24.08 second mark.

Sophomore Iman Babineaux won her first meet of the season in the 400-meter dash. The California native ran 56.42 to win the event by 0.33 seconds.

After not running the 60-meter dash a week ago, junior Shaun Maswanganyi won the event for the second time in as many entries this season with an improved time of 6.65 seconds.

Junior Lloyd Frilot won his first NCAA race, winning the 800 meters in a lifetime best of 1:53.53. The junior college transfer competed in his shortest non-relay event at the NCAA-level, previously running the mile and 1,500 meters.

Senior Christyan Sampy posted the highest collegiate pole vault mark of the day, jumping a season-best 5.46 meters. Sampy ranks 11th in the country and second in the conference. The meet winner, post-collegiate Clayton Fritsch broke the facility record with a 5.73-meter vault and now ranks top 10 in the world this season.

In the weight throw, graduate Priscilla Adejokun posted the best collegiate mark in the field of throwers, with a 21.47-meter throw that beat the previous meet record by 0.38 meters. The event winner Alyssa Wilson is a post-collegiate competitor that threw 22.33 meters.

At the conclusion of the meet, the Houston 1,600-meter relay squad won the event in 3:16.30, which isn't the fastest time by Houston three weeks into the season, but is still the fastest in the conference.
