Cougars, Tigers clash Labor Day weekend at NRG Stadium
HOUSTON – University of Houston Football will kick off the 2027 college football season in the latest announced installment of the Texas Kickoff at NRG Stadium on Labor Day Weekend. The matchup will air on a to-be-determined ESPN network.
Â
The matchup will be the fourth all-time between the programs and first since 2000. LSU leads the abbreviated all-time series, 2-1. The Cougars defeated the Tigers, 20-7, on Nov. 13, 1999, in Baton Rouge, La., as part of its lone series victory.
Â
"I'm really excited about this opportunity for us," Houston Vice President for Athletics Chris Pezman said. "2027 is the 100thanniversary of our university. The chance to start the season playing LSU in a true neutral site game at NRG here in town for a game we don't have to return is a great way to begin the year."
Â
The game will mark the 18th year of the partnership between Lone Star Sports & Entertainment and ESPN Events, a division of ESPN, to bring major college football events to NRG Stadium each year, including the TaxAct Texas Bowl, Houston's annual bowl game which also matches the Big 12 Conference and Southeastern Conference at NRG Stadium to close out the year.
Â
"Great regional rivalries, new and old, are part of what makes college football special, and we are thrilled to announce this 2027 matchup between two outstanding college football programs that mean so much to the Houston area in the University of Houston and LSU," said General Manager of Lone Star Sports & Entertainment, David Fletcher. "This event will bring college football fans together around an elite early season Big 12 versus SEC showdown, and we anticipate a truly electric atmosphere at NRG Stadium to start the 2027 season."
Â
The Cougars have competed in the Texas Kickoff three times including a memorable 33-23 victory against No. 3 Oklahoma on Sept. 3, 2016. Houston has won each of its last two matchups against SEC programs, defeating Auburn, 17-13, in the Birmingham Bowl on Dec. 28, 2021, and blanking Vanderbilt 34-0 on Oct. 31, 2015, at TDECU Stadium.
