Houston hosts 12 institutions at Robert Platt Invitational Friday
HOUSTON – The Houston track and field season continues with its second of three straight home meets as the Cougars host 12 schools in Yeoman Fieldhouse on Friday for the Robert Platt Invitational with field events starting at 2 p.m. and track events beginning at 3:30 p.m. CT.
STARTING LINE NOTES
The University of Houston community lost a beloved friend and teammate on June 26, 2019, when Robert Platt Jr. passed away. Robert was a pole vaulter for the Houston Track & Field program, competing in 24 meets for the Cougars. Prior to coming to Houston, he attended George Ranch High School and earned a third-place finish at the 6A State Championships during his senior season. Outside of athletics, Robert Platt Jr. was an active member of the Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity at Houston.
His mother, Kaddie Platt, led the Houston Volleyball program from 2012 to 2019.

STARTING LINE NOTES
- Houston won seven events at its season opening meet last week.
- Senior Brandon Seagreaves won the 3,000-meter run, breaking the Leonard Hilton Memorial Invitational meet record in the process with a time of 8 minutes, 28.52 seconds.
- Junior Shaun Maswanganyi won the 60-meter dash and ranks tied-18th nationally in the event at 6.67 seconds after his event win
- Junior De'Vion Wilson's 7.82 second time in the 60-meter hurdles ranks 14th nationally in the event after he won the event last week.
- Graduate Devin Vallejo-Bannister won the 800-meter run in 1:52.36 and sophomore Trey East III won the 200-meter dash in 21.38, winning by 0.23 seconds.
- Sophomore Destiny Smith won her first event of the season in the 60-meter hurdles in 8.37 seconds.
- Houston posted 10 other podium finishes, two of which came from the 1,600-meter relay at the end of the day with both Cougar relay squads finishing second overall.
- In her collegiate debut, freshman Aubrey Tupper finished third in the high jump, and graduate Priscilla Adejokun posted a strong mark in the weight throw with a throw of 21.17 meters which ranks 11th in the country.
- Houston has 19 marks that rank in the top five of the American Athletic Conference after the first week.
- The Cougars have five conference-leading marks after their first meet.
- Houston welcomed 29 newcomers to the 2023 squad.
- Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Will Blackburn begins his first season leading the program. Head Coach Carl Lewis begins his first season as Head Coach of the Cougars Track and Field program.
