Duo instrumental in Houston’s thrilling three-overtime victory at UTSA
HOUSTON – University of Houston Football seniors Bubba Baxa and Clayton Tune have been named The American's Special Teams Player of the Week and Offensive Player of the Week, respectively, following the No. 24/25 Cougars' 37-35 three-overtime victory at UTSA on Saturday.
Tune completed 22 of 32 passes for 206 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 51 yards and a touchdown. In the third overtime, the signal caller leaped over a defender to score on a 13-yard run for the game-winning 2-point conversion.
Baxa delivered two go-ahead 35-yard field goals, coming in the fourth quarter and overtime. His first provided Houston a 24-21 advantage with 23 seconds remaining in regulation. After the Cougars' first overtime drive stalled, Baxa put Houston on top 27-24. He also converted all three extra points. Prior to Saturday, the Pasadena, Texas, native's last made field goal came on Sept. 21, 2019, as a member of the Miami Hurricanes.
Houston rallied from a 14-point deficit in the second half at the Alamadome to snap UTSA's 10-game home winning streak. The come-from-behind victory was the 12th-biggest in Cougar Football history and largest since overcoming a 24-7 deficit against Tulane on Oct. 8, 2020.
The comeback win was Tune's ninth at Houston and sixth second half come-from-behind victory. The performance marked the ninth time in which Tune has logged both a passing touchdown and rushing touchdown in a game. He has thrown multiple touchdowns in 23 career games including four consecutive.
