Senior with records in sight entering 2022 season
HOUSTON – University of Houston Football senior quarterback Clayton Tune has been named to the preseason watch list for the 46th annual Davey O'Brien Award, the Davey O'Brien Foundation announced Tuesday.
The award, tabbed as the oldest and most prestigious national quarterback award presented to the best college quarterback in the nation, highlights Tune alongside 34 other quarterbacks voted based on performance and expectations for the 2022 season.
Houston is one of three in-state programs to have a returning starter named to the watch list along with SMU and UTSA, as well as one of three quarterbacks from the American Athletic Conference.
Amongst first timers on the 2022 Davey O'Brien Award watch list, Tune ranked third in completions and passing touchdowns, and fourth in passing yards last season. Alongside all honorees' stats from last season, Tune ranked 10th in completions and 11th in passing yards and touchdowns.
Tune posted a career year in 2021, recording career highs in games played (14), completions (287), passing yards (3,550), passing touchdowns (30), and completion percentage (68.3) while leading the Cougars to a 12-2 overall record, an appearance in the American Athletic Conference Championship game and a Birmingham Bowl victory over Auburn. His performance on the field catapulted him up the Houston record books, moving into seventh all-time in career passing yards and fifth all-time in passing touchdowns in program history.
A midseason watch list will be announced on Oct. 18 consisting of the 35 quarterbacks on the preseason watch list including any quarterbacks added to the list throughout the first seven weeks of the season.
A second 35-man midseason watch list will be released on Oct. 25, before 16 semifinalists are announced on Nov. 8. Three finalists will be selected with the winner of the 46th annual Davey O'Brien Award announced on Dec. 8 at The Home Depot College Football Awards.
