Houston joins Texas as only in-state program with multiple honorees
HOUSTON – University of Houston Football senior quarterback Clayton Tune and junior wide receiver Nathaniel Dell have been named to the watch list for the 86th Maxwell Award, the Maxwell Football Club announced Monday.
The award, named after distinguished sportswriter Robert "Tiny" Maxwell, has been presented to the College Player of the Year every season since 1937.
The Cougars are one of 13 schools to have multiple players on the watch list. Eight players from six schools across the state of Texas made the list with Houston and Texas being the only programs with two representatives. Houston is the lone American Athletic Conference program with multiple honorees on the list.
Tune posted a career year in 2021, recording career highs in games played (14), completions (287), passing yards (3,550), passing touchdowns (30), and completion percentage (68.3) in the road to leading the Cougars to a 12-2 overall record, an appearance in the American Athletic Conference Championship game and a Birmingham Bowl victory over Auburn. His performance on the field last season catapulted him up the Houston record books, moving up to seventh all-time in passing yards and fifth all-time in passing touchdowns in program history.
Dell had a breakout sophomore season, registering career highs while hauling in 90 passes for 1,329 yards and 12 touchdowns. The wideout made himself a top target for Tune en route to a spot on the All-American Athletic Conference First Team last year. The Daytona Beach, Fla., native was one of 15 wide receivers nationwide to make the list and only wide receiver from Texas to be selected. Dell and East Carolina running back Keaton Mitchell were the only two skill position players from The American to make the watch list.
Semifinalists for the Maxwell Award will be announced on Nov. 1 and the final three candidates for the award will be revealed on Nov. 22.
