HOUSTON – The University of Houston matched a new department benchmark as six sport programs earned perfect 1,000 scores in the 2020-21 Academic Progress Rate report, released by the NCAA on Tuesday afternoon.
Men's Basketball, Men's Cross Country, Men's Golf, Women's Cross Country, Women's Golf and Volleyball each posted perfect scores. It marked the second consecutive academic year in which Houston Athletics registered six perfect marks. Houston totaled five perfect scores in 2018-19.
Women's Golf posted the biggest improvement from its APR score a year ago, joining Men's Basketball and Men's Track and Field among programs with 20-plus point improvements from 2019-20 to 2020-21.
Men's Cross Country achieved a score of 1,000 for the seventh time in its history, while Women's Cross Country reached that milestone for the fifth time in the last six years. Seven sport programs (Men's Basketball, Men's Cross Country, Men's Golf, Men's Track and Field, Women's Cross Country, Women's Golf and Volleyball) equaled or improved or equaled their APR scores from 2019-20.
In all, 12 of Houston's 17 sport programs were at least 20 points above the NCAA's required minimum score of 930 with eight programs above 975 (Men's Basketball, Men's Cross Country, Men's Golf, Women's Cross Country, Women's Golf, Swimming & Diving, Tennis and Volleyball).
The APR measures eligibility, graduation and retention each term and provides a clear picture of the academic performance for each team in every sport.
The most recent APRs are multiyear rates based on scores from the 2017-18, 2018-19, 2019-20 and 2020-21 academic years.
