
Athlon Sports Recognizes 14 Cougars

Six Cougars on publication’s First-Team Preseason All-Conference teams
HOUSTON – A total of 14 University of Houston Football players have been recognized as part of Athlon Sports' preseason 2022 American Athletic All-Conference Team including six First-Team selections, the publication announced Tuesday.
Senior quarterback Clayton Tune, junior wide receiver Nathaniel Dell and sophomore offensive lineman Patrick Paul have been recognized on the First-Team Offense. Senior defensive lineman Derek Parish, senior linebacker Donavan Mutin and senior defensive back Gervarrius Owens were honored as First-Team Defense.
A pair of Cougars picked up Second-Team honors with senior running back Ta'Zhawn Henry and senior defensive lineman D'Anthony Jones being named to the offensive and defensive teams, respectively. Sophomore punter Laine Wilkins earned Third-Team honors as a specialist while sophomore defensive lineman Nelson Ceaser was tabbed Third-Team Defense.
Four Houston players appeared on the Fourth Team including offensive honorees in senior tight end Christian Trahan and junior offensive lineman Tank Jenkins. Sophomore defensive lineman Chidozie Nwankwo and junior defensive back Alex Hogan were named Fourth-Team Defense.
Houston's six First-Team honorees ranked second among American schools, trailing only Cincinnati (7). The program's 14 total honorees ranked third behind Cincinnati (20) and UCF (15).
2022 SCHEDULE
Houston Football opens its 2022 season at 2:30 p.m. on Sept. 3 at UTSA. The Cougars kick off their six-game home slate at TDECU Stadium on Sept. 17 when they welcome Kansas at 3 p.m. Other home matchups include Rice (Sept. 24), Tulane (Friday, Sept. 30), USF (Oct. 29), Temple (Nov. 12) and Tulsa (Friday, Nov. 25 or Saturday, Nov. 26).
