Track and Field Sends 21 to NCAA Arkansas Regional

Houston to compete Wednesday through Saturday in Fayetteville
HOUSTON – The University of Houston track and field team has qualified 21 individuals and three relay teams to compete in the NCAA West Regional in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

The men's team is highlighted by sprinters Edward Sumler IV and Shaun Maswanganyi. Sumler holds the fourth-fastest time in the region in the men's 100-meter and the 12th fastest time in the 200-meter. Similarly, Maswanganyi holds the fifth-fastest time in the region in the men's 100-meter and the eighth fastest time in the men's 200-meter. Both sprinters will also be a part of the qualifying men's 4x100-meter relay.
Houston will also spend sprinters Dylan Brown and Jordan Booker to compete in the men's 100-meter as well as the men's 4x100-meter relay. On the women's side, Cecilia Tamayo-Garza has qualified for both the 100- and 200-meter competitions and will be joined by teammate Camille Rutherford in the 100-meter.
Hurdlers Quivell Jordan-Bacot, De'Vion Wilson and DJ Akindele will also represent the Cougars in the regional meet. The American Athletic Conference 400-meter hurdles champion, Jordan-Bacot will compete in the same event in Arkansas as well as joining Wilson and Akindele in the 110-meter hurdles. Naomi Taylor and Destiny Smith also recorded qualifying times for regionals and will represent the Scarlett and White in the women's 100-meter hurdles.
Trey Johnson rounds out the individual track athletes qualifying for the men's 400-meters and will also be a part of the men's 4x400-meter relay team.
Houston will send three pole vaulters to regionals including top-five ranked men's pole vaulters Antonio Ruiz and Christyan Sampy. For the women, Sarah Howe will participate in the pole vault.
Benjamin Okafor will put on a Cougar uniform for the men's long jump while Jadon Brome and Quinton Stringfellow qualified for regionals at the American Athletic Conference Championship in the men's triple jump. Destiny Lawrence will don the Cougars uniform in the women's triple jump.
The Cougars will be represented by Nu'uausala Tuilefano and Priscilla Adejokun in the throwing events as Tuilefano will compete in the shot put and Adejokun will compete in the hammer throw.
Athletes with the top 12 times/marks and the best 12 relay teams at both the East and West Preliminary Rounds sites will qualify for the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon.
