Jordan secures top time, relays advance to finals
PHILADELPHIA – The University of Houston track and field team dominated on the first two days of the Penn Relays at Franklin Field.
On Thursday afternoon, senior Quivell Jordan swiftly won the men's 400-meter hurdles with a time of 49.63. His personal best time was nearly a full second faster than the second-place winner and increased his No. 8 national ranking.
The success continued on Friday when the relays began. A team of Jordan Booker, Dylan Brown, Edward Sumler IV and Shaun Maswanganyi recorded the top seed time in the men's 4x100-meter relay at 39.33. The group finished over 22 hundredths of a second ahead in the final standings as Maswanganyi broke out in the final leg of the relay.
Sumler IV followed up his performance in the relay, posting the top seed time in the men's 100-meters at 10.27. Maswanganyi also advanced to finals with a 10.52 time after winning his heat in the prelims. For the women, Cecilia Tamayo-Garza punched her ticket to finals with the third-fastest time in the 100-meters at 11.26.
Naomi Taylor won her heat in the women's 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.31 and secured her spot in the finals on Saturday. With a 13.79, De'Vion Wilson posted the fourth-fastest time in the men's 110-meter hurdles and primed a spot in Saturday's finals.
Houston again qualified for finals this time in the men's 4x400-meter relay as Jordan anchored the group to a 3:07.85. The team of Tyrell Valentine, Wilson and Adam Mason secured the automatic bid and the second-highest seed time.
Despite also posting the top time in the men's 4x200-meter relay, the Cougars were disqualified from the race due to an exchange violation. The women's 4x100-meter relay team was also disqualified despite having one of the top finishes.
