Houston earns second in four different events

Maswanganyi, Howe, Sampy, Adejokun recorded second place finishes on Day 1
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Four members of the Houston track and field team earned second-place finishes on the first day of the American Athletic Indoor Track and Field Conference Championships.
After the first day of competition, the Houston men's team sits in fourth with 32.5 points and the women are in sixth with 21 points.
Men's Field
Christyan Sampy recorded the first second-place finish of the day in the men's pole vault. He cleared a 5.27 mark and added eight points to the Cougars team score. Shaun Maswanganyi added Houston's next team points finishing in second in the men's long jump. Only his third collegiate meet in the long jump, the freshman posted a personal record of 7.52. Benjamin Okafor rounded out the podium spots in the long jump taking third. He finished with a 7.44 mark adding six points to the team score.
Women's Field
Sarah Howe contributed to the women's score taking second in the women's pole vault. Her 4.07 mark was an indoor personal best and tied her career all-time best. Priscilla Adejokun finished the night with a second-place slot in the shot put. The junior threw a mark of 21.69 and added eight points to the women's overall score.
Men's Track
Tyrell Valentine took the top time in the men's 400-meter trials with a time of 47.51. Quivell Jordan, Trey Johnson and Joshua White rounded out the qualifying group.
Houston will send five men to the finals of the 60 meter on Saturday, highlighted by top seed Shaun Maswanganyi clocking a 6.70. Jordan Booker, Edward Sumler, Trenton McDonald and Nicholas Alexander also qualified to compete in finals.
Maswanganyi, Sumler and Booker also qualified to participate in the finals of the men's 200 meter finals and De'Vion Wilson took the top spot in prelims of the men's 60 meter hurdles with a time of 7.88.
Christian Gilmore ran the fastest time in the men's 800 with a time of 1:53.20. He will defend his individual championship title tomorrow in the finals. He will also be accompanied by Adam Mason in finals who finished in fourth.
Women's Track
Naomi Taylor ran an 8.16 time in the women's 60 hurdles with the second-highest qualifying time. She will defend her two-time individual title tomorrow in finals with Destiny Smith who finished in the top eight. Cecilia Tamayo-Garza will represent the Cougars in both the women's 200 meter and 60 meter finishing in fifth and sixth, respectively, in prelims.
UP NEXT
The Cougars turn their attention to Saturday and the finals in the track events as well the field events. The new 2022 Champion will be crowned at 3:20 with the meet starting at 11 a.m. CT.
