Houston student-athletes earn high marks for 2012-13 to 2015-16 freshman cohorts
HOUSTON – University of Houston student-athletes outpaced the general student body, registering a four-year class average of 64%, compared to 61% for all students, and a 74% graduation rate compared to 62% for all students, as announced with the release of the NCAA's Division I graduation success rate data.
Houston student-athletes combined to post an 80% Graduate Success Rate (GSR) according to the NCAA's report which reflects a four-year average of freshmen who entered school from 2012-15 and graduated within a six-year period.
Five Houston programs posted a four-year score of 90% or higher including swimming and diving (93), softball (94), baseball (95), soccer (96) while women's golf (100) notched a perfect score. Nine of Houston's 17 sport programs were at a mark of 80% or better.
The Graduation Success Rate was developed by the NCAA as a measurement tool for tracking student-athletes' academic progress toward graduation.
The GSR formula removes from the rate student-athletes who leave their institution while academically eligible and includes student-athletes who transfer to a school after initially enrolling elsewhere.
"We're proud of the commitment from our student-athletes and commend our coaches and staff for providing the necessary resources and support to achieve sustained academic success," Vice President for Athletics Chris Pezman said. "Our biggest priority is guiding our student-athletes on the path to graduation and equipping them with the tools to be successful in life after athletics."
The positive trend of Houston's academic progress continues. In the spring 2022 semester, Houston's 400+ student-athletes in 17 programs posted a 3.02 GPA while passing 90% of hours. Ninety-four student-athletes were name to the Dean's List last spring. Sixty-six student-athletes graduated during either spring or summer 2022.
Cross country (3.35), golf (3.02) and baseball (2.80) posted the highest GPAs for Houston's men's sports while the women were led by tennis (3.57), soccer (3.56) and swimming & diving (3.52).
Houston Volleyball was honored for its academic excellence during the 2021-22 season by receiving the USMC/AVCA Team Academic Award. The Cougars earned the accolade after posting a 3.37 team grade-point average.
"Our student-athletes work hard in the classroom day in and day out to achieve the ultimate goal of graduation," Houston Senior Associate Athletics Director for Academics & Compliance Lauren DuBois said. "We continue to see our graduation success rate increase each year and are proud of our sustained upward trajectory."
A total of 179 Cougars were named to the 2021-22 American Athletic Conference All-Academic Team highlighted by 14 student-athletes earning a perfect 4.0 GPA during the fall and another 22 doing so during the spring. Seven teams registered 3.0 GPAs during the fall and another 11 reached the milestone in the spring.
Last spring, for the 13th consecutive semester, Houston Swimming & Diving was named a Scholar All-America Team by the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America.
