Figueriredo captures Gold and Maswanganyi competes in pair of Olympic semifinals
HOUSTON – Five University of Houston athletes and two former coaches closed out the Olympics games in Tokyo, Japan after representing five different countries in three different disciplines.

Five athletes from three different countries and two former UH coaches from two different countries, competed at the Tokyo Olympics that took place June 23-Aug 8.

JANE FIGUEIREDO – DIVING – GREAT BRITAIN
Cougar alum and former assistant coach, Jane Figueiredo opened the games for the Cougars with a gold medal finish in the Men's Synchronized 10-meter Platform. The Houston Swimming & Diving standout and former diving coach coached Great Britain diver, Matty Lee and Tom Daley to a top finish in the event, earning one of the countries 22 Gold Medals from the Tokyo games. Â
JESSIE KENLAW – WOMEN'S BASKETBALL – NIGERIA
Fomer Houston Women's Basketball Head Coach Jessie Kenlaw served as an assistant coach to the Nigeria Women's National team. The Nigerian team dropped contests to Team USA, France and Japan.

SHAUN MASWANGANYI – 100M/200M/ 4X100 MR – SOUTH AFRICA
Shaun Maswanganyi continued to make his history after advancing to two semifinals in Tokyo as a representative of South Africa. Maswanganyi opened his time in Tokyo with a 20th-place finish in the First Round of the 100-meter. He clocked a time of 10.12 in the First Round, taking third place in his heat to secure an automatic qualifying spot in the semifinal. The rising freshman had a stellar performance in the semifinal, clocking a time of 10.10, finishing in 14th-place and just outside the qualifying window for the final of the event.

In the 200-meter, Maswanganyi got out to a strong start after taking second in his heat and advancing to the semifinal behind a time of 20.58. Maswanganyi closed out his individual events at the Olympics in the semifinal round with a 10th-place finish and just 0.05 seconds outside of advancing to the final with a time of 20.18.

Maswanganyi teamed up with fellow South Africans; Clarence Munyai, Chederick Van Wyk and Akani Simbine for the 4x100-meter relay. The group failed to get the baton around.

MICAELA BOUTER – DIVING – SOUTH AFRICA
Micaela Bouter was the second South African from UH to compete at the Olympics games, qualifying in the 3-Metet Springboard event. Bouter closed out the preliminary round with a five dive score of 216.15.

TRISTAN EVELYN – 100M – BARBADOS
Tristan Evelyn competed in the 100-meter as a representative of Barbados. In the First Round of the event Evelyn clocked a time of 11.42, finishing sixth in her heat.

MARIO BURKE – 100M – BARBADOS
Mario Burke suffered an injury in the opening 50-meters of the 100-meter that unfortunately ended his Olympic debut.

BRIANNE BETHEL – 4X400 MR – BAHAMAS
Brianne Bethel teamed up with fellow Team Bahamas representatives; Doneisha Anderson, Megan Moss and Anthonique Strachan for the 4x400-meter relay. The group did not finish.
