
Houston Athletes Set for Olympic Trials

Both current and former Cougars set to compete for spot in Tokyo
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Track & Field program will have eight athletes compete for spots at the Olympic Games in Tokyo when they compete at the 2021 Olympic Trials at the historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon from June 18-27.

Mikaila Martin, Jordan Booker, Quivell Jordan, Amere Lattin, Kahmari Montgomery, Trumaine Jefferson, Brian Barraza and Chris Carter will head to Eugene, Oregon to compete in the 2021 U.S. Olympic Team Trials. Martin and Booker are fresh off appearances at the 2021 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, where each earned All-America honors. Martin is set to compete in the qualifying round of the Hammer Throw on June 24 with the event set to start at 3:25 p.m. CT. Martin holds the program record in the event with a toss of 66.89m (219-5). Booker had a stellar season for the Cougars with NCAA Championships appearances in the 4x100-meter relay and the 200-meter. The sophomore sprinter will compete next week in the opening round of the 200-meter on June 24 at 5:04 p.m. CT.
Houston will have five post-collegians competing at Trials. The 2019 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Champion in the 400-meter, Montgomery will vie for a spot in Tokyo in the event when he competes in the opening round on June 18 at 6:58 p.m. CT. Houston has two Olympic Trial qualifiers in the 400-meter hurdles a Lattin and Montgomery head to Hayward Field in the event. The duo hit the track for the opening round at 9:32 p.m. on June 24. Lastly, Jefferson is a Olympic Trials qualifier in the Long Jump and will jump in the qualifying round on June 25 at 3:330 p.m. CT. The program recordholder in multiple events and NCAA All-American, Barraza will look to advance to Tokyo in the 3000-meter Steeplechase with the opening round set to take place at 6:29 p.m. CT on June 21. Carter is set for the Trials, looking to add to his already impressive resume with as a USA Indoor Champion in the Triple Jump and experience on the international stage at the 2011 Pan American Games and 2014 IAAF World Indoor Championships. The triple jump is set to begin at 7:15 p.m. CT on June 19.
