Houston Event Squads Surge as Postseason Continues

Cougars boast multiple top-10 event squads
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Track & Field program is fresh off a sweep of the team titles at the 2021 American Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships and will head into the NCAA West Region Preliminary round in College Station with both teams in the top-25 of the latest U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association rankings.

The Houston women captured their second league title this past weekend behind a plethora of outstanding performances, improving 18 spots to No. 17. The Houston women have three event squads ranked among the top-10 in the NCAA. The Houston 200-meter event squad sits at No. 4 in the latest event rankings, followed by the 100-meter squad at No. 5. The UH throwing personnel won three events at the conference championships, as the Cougars sit No. 6 in the discus and No. 8 in the Shot Put.Â

Houston won each of the events the team is ranked in at the league championships as Tristan Evelyn walked away with the 100-meter title after clocking the second-fastest time in program history in the event at 11.14, the time ranks 11th in the NCAA this season and fifth in the west region. The 200-meter crown belongs to Brianne Bethel after she matched the fourth fastest time in the NCAA this season and second fastest time in the west region at 22.54. Her finish ranks third in program history. Nu'uausala Tuilefano, Taylor Sacife and Nora Monie secured conference titles in the Shot Put, Hammer Throw, and Discus, respectively. Mikaila Martin holds the program record in the Hammer Throw and finished second on the podium in the event last weekend.

UH scored over 200 points on the final day of action in Tampa, highlighted by a sweep of the sprints, hurdles and pole vault. Shaun Maswanganyi put on quite a display with wind-aided times of 9.89 and 19.93 in the 100-meter and 200-meter to earn Freshman of the Year honors.

Houston is home to the No. 1 ranked 100-meter and 200-meter event squads in the NCAA this season, along with top-10 rankings in three other events. UH is seventh in the 400-meter hurdles, sixth in the pole vault and third in the triple jump. Quivell Jordan improved to No. 10 in the NCAA this season in the 400-meter hurdles, clocking a time of 49.76. The Houston men swept the pole vault at the conference championships as both Christyan Sampy and Antonio Ruiz are ranked in the top-20 this season. Jadon Brome won his first conference crown in the Triple Jump and is ranked 26thamong collegians this season.
Houston will return to action May 27-29 in College Station on the campus of Texas A&M. Competitors will compete for a chance to advance to the 2021 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon.
