Houston Signees Enjoy Success at State Championships

Cougar signees earn multiple podium finishes this past weekend
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Track & Field program is excited to welcome a talented group of newcomers to the team at the start of the 2021-22 academic year. Last weekend, several of the Cougar signees concluded their high school careers with podium finishes at their respective state championships.
The state of Texas put on a show at the UIL Track & Field State Championships last weekend at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin. Cougar signee, Destiny Smith had a strong showing in the hurdles where she earned a pair of podium finishes at the 5A State Championships. She secured a second-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles (13.22) and third-place finish in the 300-meter hurdles (42.65).
Adam Mason continues to be one of the best quarter milers in the country after winning the 400-meter at the 5A State Championships with a time of 47.43. In the 800-meter, Mason came in second at 1:52.60.
In the field, incoming freshmen Chloe Coffee and Daisy Monie capped off stellar high school careers on a high note, as Coffee finished third in the High Jump after clearing 5-4.00. Monie, the younger sister of Cougar senior Nora Monie posted a pair of top-five finishes at the Championships. She took second place in the Shot Put (43-10.75) and fourth in the Discus (139-02).
In Florida, sprinter Aaron Bell showed why he is one of the most touted sprinters in the class of 2021 after winning both the 100-meter and 200-meter at the Florida High School Athletic Association Class 3A Track & Field Championships this past weekend. Bell won the 100-meter at 10.34, clinching the first title for the Terry Parker High School Boys Track & Field team in over 30 years. Bell led from start to finish in the 200-meter, taking his second title of the weekend with a time of 20.71.
Raven Nunnery will be a strong addition to Cougar sprint group after earning a state title in Louisiana this past weekend in the 200-meter. Nunnery clocked a time of 23.41 to win the race and took second in the 100-meter at 11.39.
Houston will return to action this week when it begins the postseason at the 2021 American Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships from March 14-16 in Tampa, Fla. on the campus of USF.
