
Fredgaard Tied for Second at ANWA

Sophomore at -1 through 15 holes before inclement weather suspends play Wednesday
AUGUSTA, Ga. – University of Houston sophomore Karen Fredgaard was tied for second at -1 late in her First Round at the Augusta National Women's Amateur before play was suspended due to inclement weather at Champions Retreat Golf Club.
Only the second Cougar to play in this prestigious amateur event, Fredgaard opened ANWA play with a birdie on Wednesday morning. Following five straight pars, she birdied two of her final three holes to close out her first nine.
The Asserbo, Denmark, native bogeyed No. 10 but regained that stroke with a birdie on the par-3 11th hole. Fredgaard posted two pars and two bogeys before she was forced to stop for the night on the 16th hole.
Fredgaard joined Ana Pelaez Trivino, Rose Zhang, Kiira Riihijarvi and Linn Grant in a tie for second. Katherine Smith held the lead at -4 through 11 holes.
Fredgaard will resume her First Round at 6:45 a.m. (CDT) Thursday. The Second Round will begin simultaneously at 6:45 a.m. (CDT) off the No. 1 tee as scheduled.
With the completion of the Second Round, the field will be cut. The entire 82-woman field will play a practice round at Augusta National Golf Club on Friday with the Top 30 players playing in the Final Round on Saturday.
Fredgaard earned an invitation to the Augusta National Women's Amateur for the second straight season as one of the world's leading amateur players. She did not compete in the 2020 tournament due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Fredgaard is the second Cougar to compete at the Augusta National Women's Amateur, joining Leonie Harm who played in the inaugural event in 2019.

ABOUT KAREN FREDGAARD
After an award-winning freshman season in 2019-20, Fredgaard has continued her stellar play this season.
The Asserbo, Denmark, native leads the Cougars with a 69.67 scoring average. Of the 12 rounds in which she has played this season, Fredgaard has posted par or lower in 11 of those.
She started the spring season by capturing the individual championship at the UCF Challenge with a score of 7-under 209 for the first title of her career. Fredgaard followed that with a second-place finish at the ICON Invitational at Golf Club of Houston, a ninth-place showing at the Clover Cup and a third-place finish at the MountainView Collegiate.
She currently stands at No. 7 in the latest Golfstat individual national rankings.
As a freshman in 2019-20 season, Fredgaard competed in all six team-scoring tournaments and led the Cougars with a 71.33 scoring average and 12 rounds of par or better. Fredgaard earned a team-high three Top-10 finishes, including a season-best second-place showing at the White Sands Invitational in the Bahamas.
Fredgaard joined the Cougars following an impressive international career. She was selected to competed for the Danish National Girls Team in 2016-17 and was elevated to the National Team for 2018-19.
She placed 11th at the 2018 European Amateur Championship and finished fifth at the 2018 Ladies British Open Amateur Championship, which was won by Harm.
