ARGYLE, Texas – University of Houston senior Ariana Saenz fired back-to-back rounds of par or better on Sunday afternoon to tie for 10th overall and lead the Women's Golf program during the first day of The Bruzzy.
Competing on the 6,421-yard, par-72 course at Lantana Golf Club, Saenz opened the tournament with a 72 in the morning session and drained five birdies with an eagle in the afternoon to tie for 10th at 1-under 43.
The Porter, Texas, was one of three Cougars to finish the first day among the Top-20 individual leaders. Junior Maria Jose Martinez was tied for 15th at 144, while freshman Zoe Slaughter – the reigning American Athletic Conference Golfer of the Week – was tied for 19th at 145.
As a team the Cougars posted a score of 2-under 286 in the Sunday's Second Round and stood in fifth with a score of 579. Oklahoma State held the first-da lead at 557 to stand 14 shots ahead of North Texas. Oklahoma was in third at 575 with Texas Tech in fourth at 577. TCU (582), San Diego State (582), Miami (Fla.) (583), Iowa State (584) and Iowa State (584) rounded out the Top 10.
After opening the tournament with an even-par 72, Saenz enjoyed a 71 in the afternoon session. Starting on No. 2, she birdied the first two holes but moved to +2 with a double bogey and two bogeys on the net three holes. Fortunately, she drained an albatross on the 519-yard, par-5 seventh hole to return to red numbers.
Saenz made birdie on No. 10 and overcame a bogey on No. 12 with her final two birdies of the day on No. 13 and No. 16.
After posting a 73 in the morning, Martinez, enjoyed a 71 in the afternoon, thanks to four birdies, including two on her first three holes of the day.
Slaughter rebounded from a 75 in the morning to shoot a 70 in the afternoon for the Cougars' low round of the day. Starting on No. 1, the Houston native sandwiched a birdie between a bogey on No. 3 and a double bogey on No. 5 to stand at +2 through six holes.
Slaughter quickly returned to even par and then moved into red numbers with four straight birdies on Nos. 7-10 and ended the day with eight straight pars.
Freshman Delaney Martin was tied for 34th at 147, while freshman Annie Normann was tied for 71st at 155. Competing as an individual, junior Annie Kim was tied for 63rd at 153.
Individually, Oklahoma State's Lianna Bailey held the first-day lead at 135 to finish two shots ahead of North Texas' Lauren Cox. Maddison Hinson-Tolchard (Oklahoma State), Sara Kjellker (San Diego State) and Jess Yuen (Missouri) were tied for third at 141.
The tournament concludes with the Final Round beginning with an 8:30 a.m., shotgun start Monday.

PAIRINGS
For Monday's Final Round, the Cougars will play in groups with student-athletes from Texas Tech and TCU.
Martinez begins in the first group off No. 4 with Saenz (second group off No. 4), Slaughter (No. 5), Normann (first group off No. 6) and Martin (second group off No. 6) following. Kim begins her day in the first group off No. 17.

Following The Bruzzy, sophomore Karen Fredgaard will compete as an individual at the Augusta National Women's Amateur on April 1-4 in Augusta, Ga. She earned the invitation as one of the nation's premier amateur players.
From there, Houston will tee off at the Silverado Showdown at Silverado Resort in Napa, Calif., on April 5-7.
