Sophomore Karen Fredgaard stands at No. 1 among individuals
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Women's Golf program stood at No. 14 in the initial Golfweek/Sagarin collegiate rankings, and sophomore Karen Fredgaard was ranked No. 1 among all collegiate student-athletes.
Under the direction of Head Coach Gerrod Chadwell, the Cougars opened their spring season with a fifth-place finish at the UCF Challenge at Eagle Creek Golf Club in Orlando on Jan. 31-Feb. 2. It was the program's first competition since the COVID-19 pandemic forced the cancellation of the remainder of the spring 2020 and fall 2020 schedules.
Fredgaard led the way for the Cougars, shooting 7-under 209 on the way to the first title of her collegiate career. The Asserbo, Denmark, native opened that tournament at 70-67 and then battled temperatures in the mid-40s with gusts up to 30 mph to shoot an even-par 72 in the Final Round.
She was recognized as the Golfweek National Player of the Week and the American Athletic Conference Golfer of the Week for her outstanding performance.
Junior Annie Kim finished second among the tied and tied for 23rd at the tournament at 219. The Seoul native opened the first two rounds of the UCF Challenge at 70-69.
Kim stood at No. 49 in the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings, while freshman Anne Normann came in at No. 99.
GOLFWEEK/SAGARIN RANKINGS
The Golfweek/Sagarin rankings are based on a mathematical formula that uses a player's won-lost-tied record against other players when they play on the same course on the same day, and the stroke differential and then links all players to one another based on common opponents. The rankings give an indication of who is playing well over the past 52 weeks.
UP NEXT
The Cougars return to action when they play host to their own ICON Invitational on Feb. 22-23 at Golf Club of Houston.
The Cougars welcome an elite field, including Baylor, Kent State, LSU, Michigan State, North Texas, Northwestern, Oklahoma State, Purdue, SMU, TCU, Texas, Texas A&M, Texas State and Texas Tech.
From there, the Cougars will tee off at the Clover Cup at Longbow Golf Club in Mesa, Ariz., on March 13-15.
