A Letter to our Houston Cougar Family
6/9/2020 2:58:00 PM | General
To Our Houston Cougar Family:
We stand together as one voice.
Our community continues to hurt. There are many in our Cougar Family who are in pain. The tragic actions that led to the death of George Floyd, who was a member of our Third Ward Community, have brought outrage to our city, state, nation and world.
Right now, many of our student-athletes are hurting. We are here to listen and learn from them, but also to empathize and provide support. We are here to stand shoulder to shoulder with one another as we fight to end racism, oppression, violence and injustice.
We are proud of how are student-athletes are using their voices to demand progress. Many of our student-athletes attended last week's rally in downtown Houston, refusing to accept unjust treatment of our African-American community and using their right to free speech to demand change.
For our athletics department, change comes about through action. It will also require honest conversations that could be uncomfortable. It also means taking time to educate ourselves, listening to others about their experiences and continuing to fight for those who are marginalized.
What we can do as an athletics department is to provide our student-athletes with opportunities to share their voices and to encourage them to exercise their right to vote on November 3.
Going forward, we will recommit to living out shared values of accountability, respecting each other and working to understand the struggles and pain of our African-American community. For those who support our student-athletes in competition, we ask that you also support them in their pursuit of equity and change.
We want to see change in our community, our country and our world. We must stand together and see through change that will have a lasting impact.
