
Ruiz Breaks Program Pole Vault Record at Clemson

Cougars conclude Clemson Tiger Paw Invitational
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Track & Field team concluded its run at at the Clemson Tiger Paw Invitational with quality performances across the board and a program record setting performance from Antonio Ruiz.

On the second day of action at the Clemson, yet another program record fell. Ruiz opened the day for the Cougars by besting the program record that he set only one week ago at the Charlie Thomas Invitational. The junior cleared 5.50m (18-00.50) on his first attempt, ultimately taking first-place in the event.
Another lifetime best would come from Zion Smith as he earned a fifth-place finish in the 800-meter at 1:52.73 to lead the Cougars in the event.
Jordan Booker had a stellar day on the track for the Cougars yesterday and closed out the second day with a team-best 9th-place finish in the 200-meter at 21.13.
Darby Gauntt continues to anchor the women's distance squad with an 11th-place finish in the 3000-meter at 9:59.57.
In the 4x400-meter relay, the Cougar women notched a sixth-place finish. Cecilia Tamayo-Garza, Taylor Bennett, Aliyah Taylor and Birexus Hawkins combined for a time of 3:36.32. On the men's side, Frederick Lewis III, Antonio Ruiz, Jordan Booker and Quivell Jordan finished in fifth-place at 3:08.26.
Houston will now prepare for The 2020 American Indoor Track & Field Championships taking place Feb. 28-29 in Birmingham, Ala.
