Houston Sprinters Conclude Barbados and USATF Championships

Cougars standout wins third 100-meter dash title
HOUSTON – University of Houston track & field sprinters turned in strong performances at the Barbados National Championships and USATF U20 Outdoor Championships.

Mario Burke won his third 100-meter title, as Tristan Evelyn placed second in the event at the Barbados National Championships on Saturday afternoon at the National Stadium in Waterford, St. Michael, Barbados.
Burke advanced to the final after taking second-place in the prelims at 10.38 and first-place in the semifinal at 10.44. In the finals, the Cougar alum won the event with a time of 10.24.
Evelyn advanced to the final after taking first-place in the prelims at 12.05, advancing to the finals where she clocked a time of 11.74 for second-place in the event.
The Cougars were represented by Edward Sumler IV and Frederick Lewis at the USATF U20 Championships in Miramar, Florida. Frederick Lewis took third-place in the prelims of the 400-meter dash at the championships with a time of 47.13, closing out the race with a third-place finish and collegiate best in the final at 46.66.

Edward Sumler IV represented the Cougars in both the 100-meter and 200-meter dash. Sumler advanced to the finals of the 200-meter dash advancing to the finals after placing seventh in the prelims at 21.07. Sumler concluded the race with a seventh-place finish in the finals at 21.26. The sprinter concluded competition with a 12th-place finish in the prelims of the 100-meter dash at 10.48.
