Montgomery named Track Athlete of the Year while Burrell and Lewis receive coach awards
HOUSTON – The Houston Track & Field program was represented with three members receiving South Central Regional Awards as the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced its regional honors Friday.
Senior sprinter Kahmari Montgomery was named the South Central Region co-Men's Track Athlete of the Year while Leroy Burrell earned the region's Men's Coach of the Year honor and Carl Lewis received the region's Men's Assistant Coach of the Year honor.
Montgomery currently ranks No. 1 in the USTFCCCA rankings in the 400-meter dash and No. 6 in the 200-meter dash. He is also a valuable leg on Houston's 4x400-meter relay that ranks No. 1 in the nation.
The Plainfield, ill., native claimed The American Athletic Conference's 400 title last week after clocking the world's fastest time this season with a time of 45.04. The time places Montgomery at No. 9 on the all-time NCAA list and No. 11 on the all-time world list with the performance.
Montgomery also ran a leg on Houston's 4x400-meter relay that clocked a world-record time of 3:01.51 on Feb. 9 at the Clemson Tiger Paw Invitational.
The winner of The American's Most Outstanding Performance award for his winning 400, Montgomery owns Houston's indoor 400-meter dash record and lays claim to the second-fastest indoor 200-meter dash in Houston history with a time of 20.63.
Burrell and Lewis received the coaching honors after helping lead Houston to a fifth straight indoor conference title and a consistent top-5 national ranking throughout the indoor season. The Houston men's team enters next weekend's NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships with eight different top-11 rankings including two No. 1 event rankings.
