Cougars bolster two awards for second-consecutive week
HOUSTON – Senior sprinter Mario Burke was named American Athletic Conference Men's Track Athlete of the Week, while senior thrower Taylor Scaife claimed The American's Women's Field Athlete of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday.
Burke continued his senior season with an impressive run at the Texas Tech Red Raider Invitational, where he clocked the second-fastest time in program history in the 60-meter dash. Burke crossed the line in 6.56, which converts to 6.58 due to the elevation change in Lubbock, Texas, which moves him into a tie with Elijah Hall for second on Houston's all-time list. Burkes time also places him at No. 2 in the NCAA this season in the straight-track sprint.
The award for Burke is the second of his career, and first during indoor competition.
Scaife continued to leave her mark of the Houston record book, when she broke her own program record in the women's weight throw. The senior's third throw of the competition traveled 68-8.0 (20.93m) to claim the event and move her to No. 16 in the NCAA this season. The award for Scaife is the first of her career.
Houston has claimed five American Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week honors through the first three weeks of the season. Obi Igbokwe and Lagarious McQuirter swept the men's track and field honors a week ago, while Naomi Taylor grabbed the women's track honor following the opening weekend.
