Cougars sweep first men’s track & field honors of 2019
HOUSTON – Senior sprinter Obi Igbokwe and redshirt freshman jumper Lagarious McQuirter were named the American Athletic Conference Men's Track & Field Athletes of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday.
Igbokwe made his Houston debut at the Corky Classic in Lubbock, Texas, on Saturday. The senior transfer won the 200-meter dash in 20.84, which converts to 20.91 when you factor in the elevation level in Lubbock. That time for Igbokwe places him No. 2 in the world, according to IAAF.org, and also puts him at No. 3 in the NCAA, which uses converted times.
McQuirter also made his Houston debut, competing in his first collegiate meet at the Leonard Hilton Invitational. McQuirter used his fourth attempt to travel 24-11.0 (7.59m) to win the event and move to No. 12 in the NCAA this season.
The American awards are the first of McQuirter and Igbokwe's careers, and the second and third for Houston this season after Naomi Taylor won the women's track award following the opening weekend of the season.
UP NEXT FOR HOUSTON
The Cougars return to Lubbock, Texas, to compete in the Texas Tech Red Raider open beginning at 10 a.m., Friday.
